Are you paying too much for your insurance?

Post by steve_earwig »

No, you bluddy aint :( I've got the Croatian equivalent of my MOT next week, at the same time I'll have to renew the insurance. There's only two sorts here - equivalents again - 3rd party only and fully comp. I've just had a quote through (as with everything here you can't just go online and do it):

3rd party - 3431Kn - £397.55
Fully comp - 6127Kn - £709.94

This is including my generous 15% NCB (they give you a begrudging 5% a year here)

FFS, it's just an old diesel Peugeot

Bejesus

Insurance has gone up in the UK this year by about 30% but some shopping around may get this back down again.

What yah gonna do? 3rd party it? (then not drive it anywhere, or, only during 02:00 to 02:30am) :|

When i had my renewal through in January it went from 480 to 760!!!
I compared small furry creatures and got it down to 470 for the same level of cover.

Maybe it's due to owning such a high performance vehicle? 1997 1.9td's are a must have on the touring car circuit don't you know!!!!!

But the performance of the cars doesn't compare at all, plus you're a wee small lad, while I'm almost a pensioner...

I've just spent half an hour with the insurance agent seeing why it's so expensive, it turns out the price is calculated on the NEW VALUE OF THE CAR and then some discount is given for age (which I guess would work if all cars depreciated at the same rate). This is just for the fully comp, the 3rd party only is worked out on the power output and is always that expensive no matter if the car in question is a huge barge of an estate or a tiny little sports car  There's all sorts of other factors involved, none of which make any kind of sense. Then again I had to do most of the talking using my wife as translator and as I've said before, she speaks 4 languages but car isn't one of them. I have a headache now.

The next step is to either try and run it in with the house insurance (I could save up to 120 quid!) or to try and resurrect my old insurance no claims from GB, which they honoured when I was first here but lost because I put the cars in my wife's name to get round the stupidity of having my car registration tied in with my visa and loosing a small fortune every time I did anything. Yes, indeed, something else that turns out to be a mistake in the long run

Just bear in mind your no claims bonus in the UK has a shelf life of 2 years, some companies will keep it for 3 years (how generous  ).

We've already been there - yes, apparently they keep them for 3 years too. As far as I remember the last insurance I paid for ended in September 2008, so 2009, 2010, 2011, yes, they should be able to do that. If they had any record of it :frown:

680 zloty 3 rd party on an arsetray 1.6 petrol, so about 150 quid a year, but that is based on my 40% discount carried over from the UK, if i had to go at it fresh it would be closer to a 1000 zloty a year.

Sadly the new C5 which is getting closer by the day will have to be fully comp as it will be a lease vehicle to begin with and the lease company want to know that no matter what they will get the cash back so that comes out at closer to 3000 zloty a year less my discount so im hoping for around the 1800-2000 mark.

It looks like this might be the only area where i am getting a better deal than most of you price wise, except our resident Pervert of course  surely the risk associated with only ever driving with one hand must put the cost up :?:

*1 pound is about 4.7 zloty

More arguments later today for me, I have my old policy number but I have a feeling it's still not going to be good enough :frown: I was wondering if the insurance companies here were competing with each other or were a cartel but I had another quote last night and it's more or less exactly the same, that's that question answered anyway :(

Volvo fully comp = £438.00

I did have to attend the Volvo 5-day residential 'advanced road manners' course in Bournemouth, stayed at the 'Limes' B&B overlooking the sea...well I say 'overlooking'...

But the thing is disco even driving one handed with my other hand going full bore on the old trouser snake
