1.9td's

Post by kevtherev »

my missus brother runs a chippy so i spoke to him about how he gets rid of his used oil and he says a company comes and takes it away, but says i am welcome to it if i want it :D
been toying with the idea of gettin a 1.9 td to run on veg for months now, but with the price of petrol ( currently using £100 a month just to work and back plus any weekend travelling pushing that to £120) its beginning to seem like i am stupid not to speically as i can get as much veg as i want for nowt
seen a few 406's on the bay for around the 500 quid mark add 200ish for a cambelt change it would pay for itself within 6months or so
ive read the threads on the forum and the filtering bit is concerning me a little so a bit of advice from resident veg users please
some people have quite a fancy set up of pumps etc but i will be filtering in my shed so no mains power.others just seem to use jay cloths??
i will only be using approx 25l a week so i was thiinking: let oil settle, filter thru bed sheet or similar into a clean bucket, then 10 micron, then 1 micron all into buckets then in car. would this suffice??
i know this has been covered before and i have read the threads just after someone to confirm if my planned filtering technique will be ok for the amount i plan to use?? thanks in advance

A Citroen ZX or Xsara estate would be handy, and cheap.

I got *given* a ZX estate a couple of years ago. 180k with the XUDT but drove brilliantly.

Sometimes regret selling it on, but at the time didnt have the space / money to keep and run 2 cars :(

thought i wud look at the xantia on e bay too god they are cheap 100-200 with mot one thing puts me off them tho and thats the fact they are damn ugly things  would want an estate too for lugging baby stuff seen this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Peugeot-406-diese ... 41575fe8a2 seems a steal 12 mth mot too
with regards to buyin motors off e bay i am very dubious about it (probably for no good reason) but i feel its a place where people can easily offload their crap onto unsuspecting/gullible people such as .....erm myself, any1 ever had any probs do people who buy cars on e bay always view 1st or do ya just take a punt and hope for the best??
thanks for the replies on the filtering issue , glad thats all i need to do, if petrol starts to push on for the 1.50 mark think i will take the plunge

If you don't mind a couple of hours travelling & can get them to MOT it, this could be a bit of a bargain:

Can the non-turbo diesels be run on veg oil? Thinking of the ones they used in the Berlingos. Did they have the Bosch pump in them?

Always thought the Xantia was a handsome car, truth be told.

Wont win any design awards, but not as ugly as the mk1 C5 either.

Hints of Japanese design in there, and the bootlid is very E36-ey.

I'd probably avoid the Xantia as it's got the Hydro-sussy not the end of the world as it's a fairly cheap fix but even so......

The Xsara has 'normal' sussy - not that Citroen do anything 'normal' but hey :|

I would have to disagree with your sentiment. Good point well made, but I would suggest that Hydro pneumatic suspension is nothing to be scared of.

Even for amateur weekend mechanics like me :D

The pipes on Xantias are very robust. As robust as brake pipes etc.

The spheres are like oil filters to change without the messy oil. Grip chain round, twist, off, screw new ones on. Done.

Very comfortable, and the adjustability is useful for towing / lifting stuff in and out of the boot, as is the self levelling.

Look at Xantia / C5 user reviews. The compliants are all common Cit/Pug issues - electrics, com2000, mounts etc. but not the suspension.

The XUD can have either the Lucas or Bosch. Easy to tell, the Bosch has a big "sticky up bit that looks a bit like a ufo" on top, the Lucas doesn't.

Unless it's an N/A lump in which case look at the front of the pump and it will say "Bosch" or "Lucas" :)
