I've been getting insurance quotes from Aviva.
2002 406
8,000 miles
parked on a drive in central Basingstoke
5 years no claims
TPFT
Saloon HDi 90 GLX: £680
Coupe V6 SE: £760
So more than twice the power and 0-60 in half the time only increases the premium by 12%.
Playing with the parameters for the HDi
30,000 miles: £855
So a 375% increase in usage increases the premium by 25%.
Comprehensive
£250 excess: £806
£800 excess: £949
yes, really.
Keeping it in a garage makes no difference: £680.
My parents' address in a village near Huddersfield increases the premium to £1430, a 110% increase.
Ditto for either a car park or on the street in Mile End (E1) (my last job)
So:
1. Location seems to matter, I guess its something to do with crime rates.
2. Usage seems not to matter; the mere existence of the car makes it likely to have an accident.
But this is now inconsistent with keeping in a garage not making a difference.
This can't be right.

Re: Insurance parameters
My 2002 406 HDi 90 was £360 with Quinn Direct.
TPFT
27 year old owner, 7 years no claims.
Parked on street in a postcode of an area that is occasionally in a state of "civil unrest".
Was the cheapest I could find. Tried abbey insurance, and they phoned me up and promised everything but couldn't reduce below £900. "But we include windscreen cover sir"....

Re: Insurance parameters
They stopped trading for a while, but were allowed back on the market just as my renewal was up. Still the cheapest. Although they don't seem overly stressed about sending out my updated policy with change of car.
Part of their problem was their "drive any car" clause. It was getting abused by young drivers insuring a 1.0 Corsa then hopping into a Subaru Impreza STi.....
