Will car run with Oxygen sensor disconnected ?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Will car run with Oxygen sensor disconnected ?

Post by lakemaligne »

Hi all,I drive a 1996 2Ltr 16v LX petrol ,and need to know if my car will run ok if i disconnect the Oxygen sensor (Lamda) .As some of you already know,my car has got an intermittent tickover /stalling fault and have been told by the guy who replaced it's ECU recently that the Lamda sensor is reacting very slowly ,putting the fault light on and recording ,"irregular fuel delivery". Problem is ,i had this sensor replaced 2 years ago,so decided to test it.While carrying out some voltage and resistance checks on it ,i had to disconnect it and start the car,and it appeared to tickover fine, but my question is ,will it cause any damage or problems or effect the fuel consumption once it's up to temperature on the open road.Last night on the way home it ran perfect, until i turned into a car park, and while ticking over it suddenly started revving up to 1200rpm and back again several times and then died . I was in two minds as th whether to disconnect the sensor there and then ,hence my enquiry.Would it be alright to run the car ,with sensor disconnected for a few weeks to see if my fault goes away,if it does i will replace the sensor.

According to this thread.......viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3489#p33635 it will run with the sensor unplugged.

Have you thought about having your injectors cleaned? there's a guy over on the Volvo forum I use who has made a rig for cleaning and testing Volvo injectors and he reports that he has NEVER seen an injector that doesn't need some kind of attention (even from cars with 30,000 miles) and all those injectors he cleans the owners report their coughs/miss-fires have gone, the car goes like stink, and the mpg improves 5-10% (effectively paying-back the treatment).

I'm going to have mine done soon (at 43,000 miles).

Just a thought that's all :|
