Alrite guys, haven't been on the forum for a couple of weeks. Reason being, I sold my 406. The small hole in the chasis rail turned out to be a MASSIVE issue, most of the back end around the tank and rear beam is crumbling away. Chipped at different areas with the welder chisel and big flakes fell off and holes appeared. At that point I said 'fu*k this', packed up my tools and went on gumtree. I found a 106 1.1 zest that was for sale a couple of miles away, phoned the guy and had it bought that evening after a check over and test drive. Got the 406 sold on friday to a mechanic who reckoned he could fix it, it will be alot of work and more than I was prepared to pay, at some point you have to say 'enough is enough'.

Cheers lozz, yeah I'm really pleased with it. The guy who had it before me worked for Pug so if it needed a part it got it. Its as tight as a drum to drive and is well spec'd for a 106 with electric windows, sunroof and power steering. As for fuel economy, I haven't done the sums yet but I know its going alot further than the 406 for the same money

Tidy wee car that. Always liked the 106, spiritual successor to the 205. Go kart handling, underrated GTi.

What a shame about the 406, always thought yours was very tidy.
I got to that point too with my 406. Too much wrong and every time I tried to put it right it just wasn't working out

Though at least you got a sensible car, not a gas guzzler! ( )

they melted down the old metal bins the council didnt want to make them

Rust seemed to be quite an issue on the 2000 406 i was breaking, the bottoms of the doors, and the cills. I asked my friend did his da clean it with salt
On my 2002 car the only rust was a bit of a scab on the floor under the back seat, i put on rust remover, then galvanised it. That was it, ive had the car on a lift and looked under it, alls ok bar the normal brownness you get on bolt heads. So far i liberally waxoled round the back axle because my dad said the 405 gave axle trouble. (not really necessary)
But i have the car informally organised to go to a friends during the good weather to get completley washed and waxoyled.
The exhaust was another problem, the middle section where it meets the backbox was rusted, which snapped when i hit it on a kerb.
I think the rust depends on where the car was used, and how often the grit was removed, seaside trips also are not kind on the bodywork.

its weird all these D9s rusting. my 1998 D8 is almost 13 years old and it is solid underneith.

Watch the diesels though, they might run on the smell of diesel but they do have head gasket issues. Although £300 can normally sort that out.

More detail: along the chasis rails underneath the back doors, the inner side of the jacking points. There are drilled holes in the chasis rail there and what appears to have happened is that the water and salt has got in there and rusted the chasis rails from both sides As the paint was still on the underside it looked ok, apart from the holey bit. It was only when I went to clean the area to prep for welding that I discovered the full extent of the problem, opened up, roughly a 2 foot gash along the chasis rail and this rust continued upwards for several inches in and around the rear suspension, there was no point good enough to weld to, the mechanic who has bought it will have to drop the rear suspension and cut out and refurb alot of metal Also, up in front of the tank was rusting badly too, i gave it a good scrape were I could reach up and BIG flakes of rust just fell off I'm still in shock 2bh. lol

Yeah, I can't underline how happy I am with it. Forgot how much fun a little hatchback is to drive. Also, its stupidly quick for a little 1.1, not surprised so many have been put on their lids My mate had a GTi until he flipped it onto its roof last year, now it was a fast car by anyones standard. I got a chance to drive a Toyota Glanza a couple of weeks before and the 106 GTi was so much quicker
