7 seaters

Post by Roylewaa »

Ive been wondering this for a while

Has their ever been any figures published on how many of the D8/D9 estates were the 7 seater variant?

As their doesent seem to be that many, either for sale as a 406 at a realistic price or as a seperate add on conversion

I gave up in the end when I was looking and ended up getting a spares or repair one thats been a headache ever since :(

I think the rear facing seats in estate cars were made illegal some point in the mid 2000s? and were probably dropped. (as were the side facing seats in Land Rovers)

My uncle had them in his Renault 21 Savanna. Was a bit scundering facing the windscreen of the car behind.

Weren't made illegal as Mercedes still fits them in the E Class.

I always thought the Renault 21 Savanna seats were forward facing too? Were in every one I've seen. The early Lagunas could come with rear facing seats. Something went wrong somewhere down the line with 7 seaters though. Have a look in the back of any Renault Savanna or Peugeot 505 that had the extra rear seats & there was still an Escort sized boot behind the seats. Look at any modern 7 seater (including the large MPVs) & once all 7 seats are up there's nothing really.

I thought military aircraft had all the passenger seats facing backwards because it's safer :? Perhaps they banned rear-facing seats in cars like the 406 because it puts the passenger's legs outside the crumple zone.

My uncles Savanna had definitely rear facing rear seats. Unless it was a bodge from Laguna parts....

I think with modern estates and 7 seaters, the interior is set way back (just look at the distance of the dash and the windscreen) due to crash safety. Therefore the rear seats are way back, and the rear has little space.

I do agree with you, I don't particularly like putting my kids in the back additional seats, however its not very oftern the whole family is in the car at the same time, peace of mind tho to know there is space for everyone should we need to go anywhere.....and ive got a bloody great towbar on aswell which might help if im rear ended

Money constraints prohibited me from getting say, a Galaxy or Zafira, I fancied a Nissan Terrano aswell but was way outa budget. Although if you look at 7 seat configurations pretty much, if not all the rear 2 seats are right at the rear where the crumple zones are, and tbh I dont like MPV's, I thought at the time an Estate car with 7 seats was the best of both worlds, I did look at a few Laguna 7 seaters but they are even rarer than a 406 one

They did a crash test on 5th Gear with a Zafira with dummies in the 2 rear seats, lets just say they didnt fair to well

didnt some Volvo V70's come with 2 additional seats aswell?

Funny you should say that Lozz, when I insured my D8 it came up originally as 5 seats when I gave them the reg, even tho my conversion appears to be factory fitted

theres loads about keeping the 7 seater conversion quiet mate,
only downfall is itl Void insurance this is why ive ripped them out of cars in the past,

its not you thats the idiot mate its the Twarts on the road youve gota watch,
in my case a landrover was no match for the peugeot iwas in im just glad it was me that was in the car and not my kids or they wouidnt be here,

ihad a ford galaxy for the 7 seats it was solid reliable but same again not much of a Survival zone for rear 7th seat passengers,

Mine was another question of cost. Again, the extra seats are very rarely used (only once in the year I've had it) & even then I didn't put the kids in them. But good 7 seaters for around £2k really are hard to find as they all seem to come with inherent expensive faults & those that don't cost a fortune in fuel.

Another advantage to the estates with flip-up seats is that it's not immediately obvious that they have 7 seats. Everybody knows Zafiras, Galaxies etc are 7 seats. Perfect for people in my situation as if you really don't want the extra passenger stowing away so that they can come & mooch off you for months you can just say that there isn't a seat spare...

A few Citroen alloys will fit, but the offsets are larger. Most seem to be about a 25mm offset which isn't too much of a problem if the wheels are 6.5ins or narrower. I looked into fitting the 17s from the C4s & C5s, but where the wheels are wider, it'd be a little bit too snug to the suspension components.

I think Xantia alloys would be the best fit
