MOT time

Post by tux2006 »

Its that time of year again

I was wondering if there was any checks or simple tasks I can do just to give my 406 the best chance of passing? as i'm a poor student  lol And can't afford for it to fail.(Im studying engineering so should be ok wiv most light mechanical jobbies)

My cars a 97 LX model its only done bout 80k though so fingers crossed, had new tyres last month, is it ok to leave my sports big bore backbox on? (it still has the baffler in) or isit best to get the standard one back on??

any ideas would be v helpful thanks guys...and gal :P

You'll be fine with the big bore back box, it's only decat systems that struggle through MOTs.

Basic checks I do include getting a mate to confirm all the rear lights work... then I check the headlights, horn, wipers, washer jets, tyre pressures, seatbelts, door handles inside and out, and that all the telltale lights on the dashboard light up and go out as they should, especially airbag and ABS.

I have a look under the car for any signs of fluid leaks, look at the CV boots, give the wheels a shake to test bearings.

Then under the bonnet I check the brake fluid level and have a nose about for signs of anything leaking.

I do all this a couple of weeks before the MOT and I usually do it monthly anyway to spot any potential problems before they leave me stranded!

Ya'll need to relax. :)

My 10 year old, 182K mile, veteran just flew through its MOT. If mine can do it, so can yours. Think Positive :)

Be cool. Even the yobs at the local Peugeot stealers reckon the 406 is indestructible. 'The best car Volve never made' said one.

Mine's just a whippersnapper having only 70k miles, but it's MOT passes have been so impeccable it has never in it's life had a single 'advisory' issuesto go with the certificate, and more than one tester has pronounced it a machine which belies its years.

Tis funny you shloud say that turboey.........My service manager friend at my Pug Dealer said the 406 has the LEAST problems out of the whole range.

He puts it down to the fact there is plenty of room (mostly) around the engine bay and so electrical chafing or split hoses are minimal, also components are more stable as they do not suffer so much with heat in a bigger bay.

The question now is what's the most reliable 406 ever made? Heard that 2.1TD was the least reliable diesel engine of the PSA group but that's not from personal experience (yet!).

The 2.1 XUD is a good engine when working, but has a strange hybrid mechanical/semi electroic controlled injection system that is a nightmare when it dies. The 2.2 HDi is a similar beast - great when it's working, but when it's not...

HDi 90 is a tough unit, and also reliable in Xsaras, Boxers and all manner of commercial vehicles. what are the petrol units like for reliability?

From personal experience, the 2 Litre Petrol block seems pretty solid and reliable.
