You will notice the drop in power, also to consider is the extra costs of fixing the thing (although there's no MDF to worry about) and how you drive it too - my consumption's rubbish around town, it picks up straight away once I hit an open road though.

tbh the 406 is or as been the cheapest car ive had to keep on the road,
all my other petrol cars have been complete money pits,
ive spent .. more on tyres than ihave mechanicly on the 406,
its had a pair of front drop links and a mfd display in 12mths,

iwas just thinking to my self the otherday why you dont see any 406 dervs at the sides of the roads for sale like other cars
plenty of nissans renaults fords never a 406 not even seen any on garage fourcourts, there reliabily must be the answer for this, 8)

My Uncles HDi 90 does 44mpg and he lives in West Yorkshire... In Last of the Summer Wine Country.
His house is on a steep hill and it mainly gets driven around town.
On the motorway he gets 50+...

Pissed me off when my XUD would do 44mpg on the motorway and 33mpg around town

I'd love a HDi but I'd love the XUD nature, the clatteryness, the "I'm a big ard diesel" ness feel you get from the XUD. And the fact it would run on ground down kittens

or I could try build a HDi with a mechanical pump :|

As opposed to a..? I know what you're saying, a not so bluddy full of dodgy electronics pump. WHile you're about it you could ditch the BSI thing too, maybe add another 4 inlet valves, bore it out 90ccs...

Stick a bosch pump on it! Proper mechanical bosch pump.
Stick it in a D8 Executive, stick a D9 front and rear end on it.
Who would know?
Really would love another D8 406 with a D9 exterior but someone said it's not as simple as sticking the rear light, bumper and boot lid on the back?
I assume the front end would just be, bonnet, wings, slampanel and headlights?

it would probably be easier to stick a 2.1 with a bosch bolted on but the 2.1 is indirect injection like the 1.9, the 2.0 is direct injection.

I thought all diesels were direct injection, largely due to the impossibility of atomising diesel.

You forgot bumper. Someone needs to do this badly so we know for sure. You could do it to an estate, far fewer problems (seats go straight in, back end's the same). plus you'd end up with a car that's actually useful. Especially at your age

In a Direct Injection DERV the deisel is injected straight onto the piston.
In an Indirect Injection DERV the diesel is injected in a small chamber to the side of the piston.
