Personal Plate Sale Tips?

My father has asked me to sell a private plate he has

Does anybody have any tips for going about selling it?

His plate is N4 RFC - on DVLA there is S7 RFC and that is just over 1k
Think ideally he wants £700

Any advice appreciated

i would but it on retentation then you can get his plate sorted on his car there is a fee for this and you have to renew every 12 months or you lose it.
then you sell the retentation certificate they take it to the dvla with insurance ,logbook and get a new tax disc and logbook

check out the plate sites mate,
you have to pay an Admin fee and then they send you out a valuation and a certificate of what the plates worth,
it then goes up for sale on the internet if all is agreed,


Its a long and slow process selling number plates,
and sometimes theyre hard to sell unless its a plate that looks good eg a Kev ste sorta name reg plate,
numbers and letters dont atract a quick sale its a waiting game selling them,

ive let cherrished plates go in the past with cars its too much messing about imho

putting it on retention will probably help the sale.
but putting a plate on retention costs £110 (per year if your keeping it)
retention is basically putting the plate onto a peice of paper instead of a logbook.

but if you find a buyer while its still on the car it costs £80 to transfer it from logbook to logbook

private plates as lozz said can take ages to sell. because usually the original 1st buyer personalized it to themself. so finding a buyer that the plate will mean something too may prove difficult.

advertize it on ebay is the best bet. dont let a private reg company advertise it for you because that may take even longer due to them putting about 50% on top of your price

It says on it "The Assignment Fee has already been paid" - I guess that means, the buyer doesn't have any fees to pay, as it's already been paid?

I had a quick google, and there are firms with the initials NRFC, there are a number of Rugby clubs with initials NRFC, such as Northampton
then I guess any football club starting in R - Rangers Football Club???

car had to stay until plate was sold,
car had to be motd and taxed,
you couidnt just take the plate off and sell it thats the stinging part
so basicly icouid of been stuck with a car ididnt want and had to keep mot and taxing it,
thats tomuch messing imho ,

Went through Gary's old posts and found where he used

Anyway plates on the bay for £750 to cover the cost of the fees

the new buyer will have to pay DVLA £80 to transfer it from the retention cetificate to a vehicle (logbook)

PLUS if you dont find a new buyer you will have to pay DVLA £110 to keep it on retention for a further 12 months

yes you have to be very carefull with your private plate. because if the TAX & MOT expire and the garage say want about £700 to get car passed the MOT.
and you then decide oh thats way to much i'm gonna scrap the car. you CANNOT remove the registration number .

now thats bullshit. this means a private plate is not YOUR OWN. it may be in your posession for many years but that reg still oficially belongs to DVLA.

lozz is correct a car has to have a valid MOT & TAX to remove a registration number for it
if the car gets scrapped with no MOT & TAX the reg plate gets scrapped with the car

despite how much the plate cost you £10 or £100,000 .

how long as it been on retention. i'm sure DVLA has changed that rule now and its £110 per year. i may be wrong there but thats what i thought when DVLA told me when i bought my private plate a few weeks ago.
