Doggy's latest road trip

Post by Doggy »

Just back from an overnight jaunt to the Belgium / Luxembourg area. 400 miles each way, reasonable weather,
no real traffic hassles to speak of...
Sounds like fun?
Wasn't too bad TBH, even in a Vectra estate
Anyone who has issues with Com2000's needs to try one of these babies.
The stalks don't 'click' into the position you move 'em to - hard to describe & harder to use.
Loads of road noise, not very comfy, but there just might be something in these 6-speeders as this 1.9 CDTI managed 47 mpg despite travelling at 80 or more virtually all the way, (which is a a good 2/3 mpg more than mine would have done at the same speed).

Knackered when I got back to work, but the trip home in the 406?

Bliss 8)

I'm currently doing a fuel consumption comparison between various ecu maps and have a standard 136 bhp file in at the mo, but even so, mine's a sight quicker.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

This week I argh been mostly drivin a Vauxhall Astra Van 1.7CDTi and it pains me to say that apart from my spine needing re-alignment with those shitty seats that it's not a bad old bus, *very* economical, strangely swift and pounds through pot holes like they aren't there :o it's going for an MOT today so WILL be off the road after pending repairs :|

My mums partner has a Vectra VXR. Got me to drive it to get tuned as I knew the area.

Ridiculously quick for a FWD car!

Got tuned up to 310bhp

But I know what you mean about the indicators. They are an absolute pain and I end up cancelling them and indicating left then right then left etc.

They aren't "stalks" like a normal car that moves up and down when you push to indicate.

They're more like the stereo buttons on the side of a 406 wheel, you push them down and they don't really go anywhere but set off the indicators. Take a while to get used to.

This was a 58 plate with 24k on the clock. Granted, it's a 'poverty spec' machine, but compared to my 52 plate with 150k+, it's slow, noisy, uncomfortable and well, dull. I imagine it's the 120 bhp 1.9 CDTi, (Fiat JTD in disguise). Doesn't like slogging at low revs, doesn't like revving, sounds agricultural and no, I don't want one.

ah rite,
the ones my mate use are 2.2 there quick,
the only problems with them they have pump problems,
my mate as got 3 vectras in at vauxhall at the moment 1 needs an engine there all 08 plate or newer,
ithink the 406 makes abetter taxi but ilove the shape and the build quality of the vectra,

My experience with Vauxhall build is very poor, most of the interior feels as though it's clinging-on for dear life, everything feels as though it will break and the paintwork is very thin and marks easily.

There's one good thing with vauxhalls and that's the ride quality.

Oh, the Van I refered to above passed with flying colours :? I am very confused, I know for a fact that the headlamp aim is out, the rear brake light bulb is working in reverse (yes I have tried the bulb both ways round), the rear brakes don't and two of the tyres are decidedly worn (one has a gash in the side wall and looks down on pressure).

Still I get to use it for another week so will save at least £40.00 in Volvo Duty

Oh, you mean the NEW shape ones, yes I've heard they are much nicer but then again material developments are getting better all the time. Look at the plastic surrounding the 406 handbrake area and you'll soon see the difference in new cars' finishes.

My colleague has just switched from an 07 Skoda Octavia diesel to a 10 Vauxhall Astra SRi 1.6 petrol. He's not impressed with the build quality - everything feels cheap, or less well-built. Even the stereo is crap in comparison - he's already looking at 3rd-party head units and speakers because the sound system is so poor.

Ive been in a new vectra i didnt like it. Fair enough the interior is more modern but remember the 406 is from the 90s.
The 407 is better than the vectra.

I would like a job at top gear.

not many 407 taxis about,
so that enough said about thems being popular,

the new shape vectra is a good motor imo but its like any other car somepeople dont like them,
like the 406 they was mainly bought for buisness use.

ibuy a car for its reliability not its looks.
how can people say a car is not as good as another withought actualy driving one, :?
