It's immaterial now

Car was

UTTER
PILE
OF
SHITE

The guy said he'd be there at 10am
We ended up getting there for 0930
Car was sitting outside his unit and was unlocked

In the pictures it actually looks a tidy car

However, if you look at the pics, he's just washed it and a wet car doesn't show the imperfections up as much
Panels were dinged up to feck
Interior looked absolute sh*t hole
Drivers bolster to say was worn was an understatement - leather was about gone
Doors had classic crease where been over opened

If an owner can't be bothered to keep the interior clean, then chances are they ain't been bothered with servicing the car as well
I know that ain't the end and be all of it, but it needed a bit more work than expected
Front chassis rail was creased
Rad was damaged
Took out a power steering pipe
Tailgate was damaged ( originally thought it just needed the strip at bottom )
Passenger front door needed re-aligning as gaps weren't right

Didn't even bother waiting for the guy to turn up and try and start it
If I gave £500 for that car I'd think i'd been ripped off

Wasn't a patch on my car
Ok, my car may have 175k on it, but still drives like it's got half that on it
It would of been sheer stupidity to take that car on when i've got a car like mine

All I lost was a couple of gallon in diesel, and £4 for a big fat breakfast cob for my mate, and a few hours of my time
The few hours of my time was in helping him back out in polishing up and valeting a car he had just finished repairing
I thought it only fair as he said he didn't want anything for coming with me, and as he had lost 2 hours of time in which to finish the car off, it seemed the right thing to do

The bonus was that whilst I did the polishing on this 307, he sanded down the rear spoiler on mine that had reacted, and got it back into primer
We are going to leave it a week to play safe
Last time the rear spoiler was ok for a few days then we think the heat drew out the solvents from the previous paint that was on the spoiler

We also gave it a good spruce up on the exterior ( as he does a bit of valeting as well )

As from the "Onions" thread, better the devil you know, and the plodmobile is likely to stay a bit longer
Ok, the fact it will be 5 years of ownership this summer was bugging me
I reckon i'm going to be seriously pissed when the car goes as it's such a good car in the first place

Calipers are still being refurbished ( guy was on holiday )
Think i'll get my mate to do the few stone chips here and there as well
If Gary doesn't manage to sell his seat ECU, then i'll have that off him, and get the heated seats up and working

The plodmobile has won a reprieve for now

Think you did the right thing in looking though - if you hadn't you may have been wondering about it for weeks & may have even got the idea stuck in your mind for getting rid of yours.

Now you've seen how a newer car can still be a pile of shite compared to a well looked after old one, it's made you feel a whole lot better about what you have.

My 2002 406 had a lot of rust.

Advert photos can hide a lot if wet an shiny. Especially on bloody gumtree.

If that car was on gumtree it would be advertised as "MINT PUEGOT 460, 1ST 2 SEE WILL BY, NOT LIEK USUAL RUBISH"etc.

Reckon you did the right thing. If you're patient and persistent I think you could find an SE or similar in good condition for about £1500 after haggling these days. When mine gets over 200k, I'll start looking for a lower mileage 2.2 with a dodgy FAP. :supafrisk:
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

:arrowu: there's a 2.2 with fap issues on ebay at the mo, i think it was a 2002 exec
it's on my saved list, but think i'll do a few of the minor detail jobs on the plodmobile first

**Edit**
Just double checked, and it says SE, but most definately an Executive
Problem is, the mileage..............................204k!!

Yeah - sounds like a good idea to give it a wide berth!

Realistically, even if you believed the car's value was 2500 quid - it's still going to be Cat C registered!

At the risk of giving Dave another dilemma of whether to keep or move on, would this be what you were looking for:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2002-PEUGEOT-406- ... 2c5c3250ee

At 121k, the miles aren't especially low, but the price seems sensible & I think that's around your area(ish) isn't it?

In Gumtree mode I would be suspicious of the lack of photos of the nearside doors, as this was where the rust on SCZ was.

Airbag light may be something as simple as a bad connection to the airbag ECU under the centre console. I got that after I replaced the COM2000 as I had broke the clip. Remedied by breaking the rest of the clip off. Never saw the light again.

Good point

If it had to be a silver one, I think i'd be more inclined to this one although it's a 110

Is it specifically a saloon you're looking for?
