someone had put the pipe through into a metal oil can holding a gallon of 4 star enough to get it through the auction,.

They are not that bad, the old carina was fixed for £60 and turned out to be a great going car.
Most auctions let you have a look about and mini test drive during the day before you buy.

You keep going on about how badly you want another 406 - why don't you take the drive up & see if you can pick it back up for the £175? It may not be your Exec or GLX that you are looking for, but you know the car & at £175 you should still be able to afford to put all the leather & extras in as you go along.

iagree with wauve

buy the 406 back no point driving to an auction for a cup of coffee and to breathe in some Zorst fumes,

stop being silly and buy it back whilst youve got the option of buying it cheap after all Its better the Devil you know,

ibet the 406 will last alot longer than that Focus does 8)

Yeh he's rusting underneath, found out when I replaced all the rear suspension, the car had a habit of spinning out on roundabouts.

No this one would never suffer with lift off oversteer. It's just one day you'd be going round a round about and it would kick out  Was due to worn bushes, was like a new car after everything was changed.

Mines like that mate ive got used to it ,
it did feel like adeath trap when i first drove it tho,

anything over 30 round a medium bend and the back end throws the front end all over the place,
it reminds me of a Mk5 cortina,

iwill fix it one day

I didn't realise how poor my handling was until I used Mum's 55 plate Mondeo for the couple of days while mine got the air con fixed. Mine gets a little twitchy at the front at anything over 30mph on the roundabout near where I live, but the Mondy felt well planted at 40mph. Thing is though, you do have to remember that my 406 was designed in 1999 & the Mondeo facelift was 2003 - 4 years is a long time in chassis development & the 406 was always 1 step behind the Mondeo in handling because it was more designed for comfort.

Back to Bernard though - is the rust at the back end pretty terminal then?

ithink the mondeos are alot better on handling than the 406,
iused to throw my Mk1 and mk2 round bends they went with the flow,
theyre a little bit spongey on level roads tho they sort of lean in where as the 406 stays rigid theres no give in a 406 suspension there too hard imo :?

Theres actualy a video of a blue 406 d9 on the you tube going round abend around 35 mph it doesnt stay on any of its wheels,

Handling wise, between the facelift nothing was changed, same old MK3 Mondeo chassis throughout the range.
The ST220 had a completley different front suspension setup though.

Also, not that bad, mainly holes in the sills. I don't like rust :(

I can get mine to oversteer very easy go into a corner and tap the brakes mid corner :cheesy: , but it never comes unexpected, since putting on the strut brace i have never noticed any understeer, unless i do it intentionally, but oversteer is much nicer than understeer.
Peugeot should really go back to making RWD saloons, what is the advantage to FWD in a big car, the packaging of a 3 series or C class is no different to a 406?
