Hi,
I have just got a D8 2.1 TD wagon and it has some issues. I have been trawling the forum for someone who has a similar problem but I can't find it. The car will go along nicely then, after accelerating it will run lean or something and detonate, rattle it's head off! and spew smoke out the back... after a bit it will be fine and drive nicely. It has a huge loss of power.
1. The fuel pump has been tested and ok.
2. new filters in the main one and the tank.
The problem started after the previous owner changed the cam belt. Wondering if the problem is electrical or fuel related?
PLEASE HELP as I really want this car to be reliable.
Cheers, Tim.

That sounds very similar to the problem i'm having, but with a 1.9td.
Does the 2.1 Lucas setup have a sensor on the 2nd/3rd injector? If it does, check the wire, it'll be either frayed, snapped or worn through. It feeds the ecu with timing info, when the ecu gets no data it sends the engine into full advance, which makes it knock like a bitch and run like a bag of crap.
Go over a slight bump and the damaged wire falls back into place and suddenly everything runs fine.

Needle lift sensor - it's on the injector nearest the cam belt, mine ran like a million mile taxi when it messed up.

Sweet, After looking through the forum for about 4 hours i came to a similar conclusion. Thanks so much people. I have to fix the car or I will give it back to the old owner and get my money back... but the car is in such good condition that I really want to keep it.
Cheers,

ok,
so i have replaced what i thought was a faulty plug, can i get a new sensor to put in, or do i need to get a whole new injector?
Thanks, Tim.

I *think* the injector with the lift sensor is all one thing. Might be worth phoning someone like United Diesel to check.

OK,
So i took it to an efi place that fault checked the computer. came up with the fuel needle sensor and the pump timing sensor. Cleared the faults, went for a drive till it failed again. Checked the faults and the pump advance sensor was the culprit.
A replacement pump in Australia is $3000!!! (bout 1800 quid).
Apparently Diesel Bob does a bosch conversion on this motor. Anyone know of a kit?
I have been reading that the 1.9 bosch pump works on this motor as well. How involved is the swap? Does the lucas ECU plug straight in?
Thanks,
