D9 Pre-wired Extras - or lack of...

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Took a trip to the local scrappy today. May not have come away with all the parts that I wanted, but was certainly educational.

Sat in there was a 99/T (D9) LX. Most of the interior trim had already been well obliterated allowing me a superb view of the white plug for the cruise control stalk attached to the steering column. Popped out the diagnostic port & also found the wiring for the on/off switch plugged into the blank next to the diag port. Also popped the coin slots out of the centre console to find the heated seat wiring plugged in to the underside of them. On top of this, I also had a nosy under the seats & found 3 extra plugs taped up to the underside of the seat - the yellow one to power the electric seats, a brown one (for the heated seats?) & the red one for the side airbags - Peugeot weren't even fitting side airbags to the 406 in 1999!

However, as per Highlander's old LX, no wiring for the puddle lights was attached to the doors.

Another interesting point to note is that Wasp's car couldn't have the cruise enabled on the BSI until he fitted a later BSI (from a 2000 car if I remember correctly Dave?).

So from all this info I've come to the following conclusion about D9 wiring & extra functions:

In 1999 Peugeot (while being a bit tight with the standard kit on LX & GLX models) fitted wiring for cruise control, heated seats & electric seats (whilst leaving out the extra door wiring), but fitted BSIs that didn't recognise any of it into the lower models.

In 2000 Peugeot (whilst being a bit more generous with the standard toys) decided to fit a BSI that recognised all the extra equipment, fitted extra wiring into the doors for courtesy lights, but left out the wiring for the cruise control, heated seats & electric seats. I'm guessing that they used a standardised door loom on all models after 2000 & if anybody has an X plate or later L model, they may be able to confirm this theory as correct by checking for extra wiring in their rear doors which would be used for electric rear windows.

Now to me that all sounds very backwards (& probably very French) & makes it also seem like the best bet for maximum add ons is to buy a 99 model & get a later BSI fitted. But this also possibly answers my queries about my non-functioning door card lights. Taking the above logic into account it seems very probable to me that while Peugeot may have been generous enough to provide the wiring in the doors for the lights, it is also highly likely that they didn't bother to fit any of the required wiring into the car.

Somewhere there is a French auto electrician pi**ing himself with laughter whilst I will now be on the lookout for either a set of black Rapier door cards or something that can replace the lights on my leather ones in an interesting way. Maybe a reflector with a lion template over the top - I'm open to suggestions.

It occurs to me that the 'puddle lights' switch on & off immediately on opening / closing any door bar the tailgate. This implies it wouldn't be too difficult to hook them up without bpthering to go through the BSI.

Am I right in thinking you have all the wiring within the doors, just nothing on the 'body' side of the connectors?

Not 100% on it, but I'm pretty sure there won't be any wiring on the body side based on the lack of wiring for anything else in the car. Had considered wiring them up, but after seeing what happened after Farmerpug's footwell lights, Ithought it safer not to.

An auto sparky friend suggested that I could use LED bulbs instead of normal ones as the voltage is so low that the BSI would be fine, but it's still a bit of a risk for a silly set of lights.

I think the cruise control at least in the first models ( the ones that doesn't have the COM2000) don't need the BSI, these are controlled by the ECU and the engine it self,if you notice closely and this is what i think the button for the cruise on the dashboard triggers the ECU for the cruise control, and the stalk for the same fact controls the ECU itself and it won't pass throw the BSI, because at least in my estate there is all the cables as you mention, it even have the other sensor on the break pedal so when you break the cruise control stops, and all " these " extras are just options for the client because it is just plug and play for peugeot ..like the freaking trip computer mine didn't had trip computer, i just changed the wiper stalk with a functional trip computer and then went down to the BSI configuration and select in there.

So, i think yours not having is a sign that it was a very very special version, or one that was sold fully with bugs ( not having stuff that should have ) :x

I'm gonna try and be masochist, i'm about to buy a cruise stalk and the dashboard cruise button.

This is just my opinion, and my thoughts
