Slight oil leak 406 hdi 110 2004

Post by panadero »

Since removing the under engine tray/shield, I noticed spots of oil regularly on the ground. Probably been
leaking for some but not noticed due to presence of protective tray/shield. Garage thought leak
was coming from "the pipe that runs between the intercooler and the turbo". Nothing too serious seemingly.
Does the above diagnosis sound plausible to the readership please and can I sort it myself?

best to wipe everything down with a rag
and keep an eye on it,

mine had oil specks at 1st ithought it coming off somewhere near intercooler and pipework but it was the rocker cover leaking and it was finding its way down to the lower parts of the engine sorted now and no more oil on the pipes,

its hard to guess where oil leaks comefrom so its best to clean off and keep an eye on it and see if you can work out that way,

Well,i would have thought it could be coming from that pipe as there is oil in the intercooler & pipe work. But if it is,i would have thought your performance may be down as surely the i/cooler/boost pipes would be sealed.
To be honest,it could be coming from anywhere. My 2003 hdi started leaking oil around 100k miles, from many places  But it dose`nt make alot of mess on the floor & dose`nt require any oil top ups between services so i dont worry about it.
That is unless it leaked a huge amount.
Try to keep everything clean & you may be able to trace it. :)

The comments from hammerman are particularly interesting because the performance on my car has
never been that good (i.e. as compared to my previous 306 1.9 TD) although it has done only 33K from new.
So I am wondering if there is some connection between this performance aspect, the oil leak and say the turbo.
Tricky one I know and I agree no point in worrying too much about small amounts. Many thanks to all,

What engine do you have??1.9td,2.1td or hdi??The 406 is a heavyier car than a 306,so it would be slightly slower than a 1.9td 306,if you had a 1.9td.But if you have a2.1td or 110 hdi,it should be quicker than a 1.9td 306.Just my thoughts.
I had a 1.9td Xantia & the intercooler pipe came off.It was as if the turbo had been taken off as there was no performance. So if there is any leak in the intercooler pipes or turbo pipes you would get some oil leakage & loss of performance.
But if its only tiny amounts of oil & you are happy with the performance, then dont worry too much.Just keep an eye on it :)

My engine is 2.0 HDI 110. The car is noticeably heavier than the 306 1.9TD especially being the estate and is definitely slower. The
power to weight ratio will be an important factor in performance comparison, as hammerman says. Thanks to him
again for his comments about the turbo/intercooler.
