Arggggghhhhh...

Post by Bailes1992 »

For a while I've suspected my steering rack to be dodgey.
A few weeks ago i found out it wasent bolted down, go bolted it down and had front wheel alignment and it was fine again.
Teh few days ago it started making a "Booomboom" noise. Abit like a heart beat Low and behold my steering shake is back.
Have a look at this videos...
You might not be able to hear the sound with Laptop speakers.

(Ignore the mattress I crashed into)

And someone pointed me in the direction of youtube...
ATjdVu1Ff-Q
H9bSD-3GSaA

Both the above videos are a very similar noise to what I have... both above videos required a new steering rack :(
Really? Yes. :(
Gutted? Yes :(

So looking at £120 for a recon unit, spare droplinks & ball joints going to be £50ish and contacted ford for a price on every single nut and bolt I'm going to have to remove, chances are one or two are going to rqeuire drilling out.
I cannot wait :|

And next monday I'm off to Yorkshire... who thinks I'l make it with my steering rack like this?

Thing is at least with this car I can guilt trip my Dad into helping me towards paying for repairs.
If I buy my own car then thats my arse if anything goes wrong

Although if I paid £350 for the 406, got £1000 For the focus I'd have abit of cash to one side for repairs.
And now I've started doing most the work myself it wouldn't be too expensive either.

At least with my 406 I wasen't having to do things like avoid motorways because I'm sick the the steering shake.
I'm having to go through breacon and up simply cause I get annoyed at my steering shake and my car is gears so retardedly at 56mph in 5th you have no power at all, you have to drop into 4th to get anywhere resulting in crap mpg.

I only use 5w-30 Semi synth and change it every 5-6k/6 months. And it burns oil through it's valve stems! At a rate of about 750ml/1000 miles.

My Pug used the cheapest of the cheap 10w30 oil I could find changed every 3k/3months and it didn't burn a drop :(

i think its been since august of last year since i did an oil change, the dipstick still has the same amount of oil.
Of course being a hdi the oil level sensor is more like a spirit level, park on a slope and it tells you to TOP UP ENGINE OIL LEVEL.

I have been thinking about getting a nice D9 Rapier as I love my Uncles but I prefer the XUD as a whole and an Executive TD will be just as niceley specced :)

If I do get another 406 in the future I'l be looking to D9 the exterior anyway :)
