I feel I must add that my 55mpg is mostly rural 50ish mph driving with the odd blast at 65-70 on the M5. I do hardly any town driving as my normal comutes are outside rush hour times.

My 2.2's a bit thirstier - I get 43/44 mainly out of town. I do a 30 mile commute, half A road, half A14 twice a day.
Try to stick to the legal limit or just below, however others have noted I occasionally lack self-control.

Mine is almost all town. Also being in Milton Keynes it is full of roundabouts so constantly stop start. When I do get on to the open roads (All private of course!) I tend to do 85-90mph.

I gave my MAF a really good clean yesterday using special electrical cleaning spray from Maplins. So far so good.......Turbo coming in just under 2,000rpm and pulls very well up to 4,500rpm. Not sounding like a boy racer here but this Escort GTI was right up my bum earlier so I floored mine and we were neck and neck. I was impressed as they are 130bhp as standard. I am wondering as the last owner of my Pug was a Traffic Cop in his late 50's who used to get the mechanics at Thames Valley to do all the work on mine if they may have 'tweaked' it a touch as she will pull to 100mph with ease.

It's possible if yours is pulling up to 4500 - mine just loses it all at 3000rpm. Now I'm not sure if maybe mine does need a bit of attention? Should the power tail off at 3000rpm or does it sound like I need to give it a bit of a clean out? If so, what needs cleaning usually?

Sounds like the same performance as mine. In my days of cruising Europe in it, 100+mph crusing was quite ok if a tad thursty. I notice turbo boost from mine at 1500 onwards and i never knew it went to 4500. That is a lot for a aged diesel.
With reference to the escort, torque is the thing not horsepower.
Probably the difference between mine and yours is driving style.

The general opinion on here is that 3000 rpm is the normal maximum for these engines. the late 2000s at the most is time to change up. Mine spends most of its working life between 1500 and 2200. Thats where the torque is.

At long last of nearly 1 year of ownership....... She has been Superchipped. It was done 18 months before I got her.

Richard.....

I think you are correct, its our driving style that must alter our economy, with my right foot being that bit heavier :cheesy:

HDi runs out of puff at ~3000 rpm where the torque curve goes flat.
See power & torque curves.

I came by a copy of this one: http://www.superchips.co.uk/curves/psa22hdi.pdf

Unfortunately it won't run on mine - judging by the error codes, it's from a pre-mux car.

Some say the S/C map is better than the 'other leading brand', but who knows?

True, but personal experience tells me removing a FAP, that wasn't blocked, doesn't make any noticeable difference - maybe a gnat's but you could easily persuade yourself either way. Didn't notice any change with the cat either, (apart from the smoke). :supafrisk:
