Electric window question

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Electric window question

Post by OdinEidolon »

I hate to turn the car off, remove the key just to find I forgot a window glass open. I then have to reinsert the key and turn it, and close the window.
Is it possible to have electric windows work even when there is no key in the ignition?

well there should be a 'moment of grace' (a nickname me and my dad give it, because his nissan hasnt got it)
in my car when i take the key out, there is about 1 minuite where if i take the key out the electric windows and sunroof are still active to let you open or close them.
Could be a bsi option.

i recall even the 2000 car i broke had it. It must be a bsi option.
Take the key out of your car, keep the door closed and see if the windows will operate, in some cars opening the door might turn that off, although it shouldnt do it in the 406.

No, it does not work no matter if I open the door or not, or if I remove the key. It only works if the key is in pre-ignition or ignition position.

EDIT: could it be some fuse to move? I heard that if you move the fuse of the cigarette lighter you can have permanent live feed to it. Could this be true for windows too?

i took a wire from the batttery, threaded it carefully along the engine bay, then in through a grommet/hole in the firewall/bulkhead, then that gave me 12v permanent in the footwell, that was 12v free from all the crap such as fuses and Bsi and ecu, so i used it to feed the footwell lights and a 12v cigarette socket.

IF you have got a D9
iwouidnt bother trying to adapt the Electrics in anyway its not worth it !
the bsi is very sensitive ive only got one wire on mine that is not standard and it throws up faults .
ionly did that tho as ihad no heater blower and it was winter,

theres loads of things id like to add but its not do able
ihad my share of electrical problems on a Renault laguna which had a fried bsi it got weighed in . :(

the electrics are workable with but you need to be very cunning to avoid upsetting the bsi.
I dont know if yours has it but my executive has lights in the door cards, i tried to use the power going to these to power up the footwell lights i added, this upset the bsi, everything electrical inside the car went mad, the fan went on and off randomly, all the dials had a party, the radio didnt work and the digital display didnt display a thing.
So i had to abandon that idea, but thats what happens if you mess around with the electrics.

Mines doesnt have door lights icarnt see anywiring for them either,
the Bsi must level out all the volts and shares out the correct volts between each thing.
the peugeot isnt the only car that does this, Have you seen the Mk3 mondeo clocks throw an Epy ?
there not far behind the 406 for faults,
worst Nightmare ive encounterd is the Renault Slags there a car iwouidnt buy again and them key card things push button start is a joke ..the french must have had a Big block of cheese and a Early night when they desighned them :?

itowed a new shape megane back one of them things with the big arse that had a snapped cam belt it wouidnt let you release the handbrake until you pressed the brake pedal and pushed the start button good idea that as it bent another 6 valves :?

them big arse meganes have stupid electrics, i hate being told to push the clutch in on them to start them.
Although i hated my clio, and it wasnt excessivley unreliable the immobilizer had a tantrum every now and then but that was a case of getting out and locking the car and getting back in.
What i hated really hated about my clio was how shite it felt, the gearchange was so fecking vague, it moved up and down when you sped or slowed down, and the steering was so lifeless and dead you thought renault mounted it in playdough, really i had a flat tyre and there was no communication through the steering to let me know this was happening. And the seat was very uncomfortable.
A shame really because the clio had quite a good chasis, it handled well just the crap drive took away from this.

Back to the subject the clio had windows that stayed on for a while, so to did my fiat panda.

I have a D9.
I have door cards lights, i was thinking to add led footwell lights too, in fact I just ordered LED strips on ebay. did you use leds or incandescent bulbs?

By the way I do not think that windows not running after shutdown is normal, my old C3 and even my 106 had that feature.
