Although I really like my car :
It drives really nice
It's uber reliable - think i've stated before, i've only broke down twice, both my fault, for pushing the range a bit too far and ran out of fuel
I think it looks nice

plus i've spent a fair few quid doing it up

Leather seats from a 65K car - no rips around seat switch!!! Electrics wired in although drivers front base doesn't go down
V6 Powerflow Stainless Steel zorst ( the pipe linking the 2 boxes is mild steel )
De-cat'd
Front end resprayed and all door and bumper trim colour coded
OE Rear Spoiler - had it resprayed, but had reaction, but will get it resprayed
Clear side repeaters
406 Coupe Leather Steering Wheel
B pillars de-stickered
Aluminium Dash Ring Set (5pc)
D9 Air Vents
D9 Handbrake Button
Ashwood Ashtray w/ rubber mat
Ashwood Dash Trims
Ashwood Door Trims
406 Coupe Strut Brace
Professionally painted air vent/clock surround, mfd surround, radio, air con control
Professionally painted door handles - rear two have a chip in each where accidentilly dropped whilst fitting, but would consider paying to have 2 more repainted to match

Engine re-mapped to give 140 BHP and around 300lb torque ( have factory settings on a disc should you wish to return it to 110bhp )

Both rear hubs replaced last year

I'm currently having a set of rear calipers refurbished, and bought a anti vibration brake pad kit from the stealers the other day - was about £18 ( will be around £150 for the brakes by time done and fitted )
Buying a spare seat ecu and wiring conversion off Gary, which has the heated seat function on it - so will include if the buyer wants to fit


There are a couple of chips and scrathches on a couple of panels that could be sorted easy enough

There is a 2003 SE only 15mile away for sale at the mo that i'm tempted by


The faults of the car are thus:
a chip on each rear door handle where I had them painted silver, and dropped whilst fitting - will try and get another two painted
rear spoiler has some blisters - currently awaiting the painter to arrange re-painting
some minor chips and scratches - 1 on front drivers door; 1 on rear drivers door; 2 or 3 on rear bumper; few chips on wing mirrors
The car has done a few miles - 175k - just under 15k a year average (1999 on a S Reg) - although just stating the fact rather than it being a fault - but in reality, it's probably just run in for a HDi
The EML light comes on once in a blue moon - last time was during that cold spell few months back, but performance isn't affected
Orange plastic around fag lighter broke - can't tell but mention anyway, but spare one included in sale
Rear passenger check strap stiff - got a spare one in boot but not yet fitted
Seat switch needs new clips to hold in place, and won't go down on front of base ( up works ) - usually switch, used replacements available on the bay for £25
Drivers arm rest doesn't stay in place - don't think spring has enough tension
Rear Sunblind needs a new clip

Probably being a bit picky on the faults, of which i'll try and get some sorted


Obviously private plate isn't included in the sale
Mot is till May, but not expecting any problems, and Tax is till end of November ( so worth £140 )

Just testing the water at the moment, but if someone is seriously interested, i'll put in motion the plate transfer

I would think if the car was a bog standard 1999 HDi 110 GLX, then £800 would be a fair price, so I consider £1100 a fair price given all the upgrades

You may not like this, but I really think you'll struggle to get £800 for a 175k D8 Saloon, as nice as it is though. I've seen too many going cheap just lately & the sad thing is, most people would rather buy cheap to start with (even if it ends up costing them hundreds in maintenance over the following months).

I also think that if you sell that car as it is for any less than £800, you'll be doing kicking yourself later if the newer car needs something fixing that was already done on yours.

Honest opinion - if you're desperate for something newer, use as much as you can from the current plodmobile & sell the car as near to standard as possible.

Is the car you're thinking of getting advertised online anywhere that we can all see? You never know, somebody may know something about that one that might make you feel better about your current wheels.

Hope you're not offended by that Dave - just my honest opinion about the used car market & what most buyers are like & what 406s seem to be going for at the mo. When searching for bits for my car I just do a Peugeot 406 search on the whole of Ebay & check newly listed items each day to see if anything new turns up, so I get to see a lot of the cars for sale too.

If it makes you feel any better, I never would've pegged your car for 175k on it as it looks cleaner than most examples with half that.

The £800 price I got by looking on eBay, and seeing what a similar age 406 GLX would fetch
I was actually looking for £1100, and have edited the first post to reflect this
Would of said £1000, but with the money i'm putting into refurbishing the calipers, and the paintwork, I guess spending over £200 to only ask another £100 on the asking price, I didn't think was unreasonable
If not doing the above, and if I'd cashed the tax in, I guess I could of asked for £850


Wish i'd kept the original seats now - Leather with conversion owes me a smidge over £200
Think i've got all the original stalks
Got the wood trims still
Got the original steering wheel

Would just be a real shame to return it back as much as I can

I was into RC racing until recently and with that, when selling a car, you always returned the car back to standard and sold the hop ups as you made more money

Which to be honest, reinforces the argument for sticking with the old girl. I've totted up what I've paid out on mine over the past year & a bit that I've had it & even taking the low mileage into consideration, I wouldn't get anywhere near what I've spent in bits alone for it.

If you do still stick with the selling plan, you could always find somebody who'll take the upgrade bits with their standard stuff in p/x? Reckon the wheels could recoup an easy couple of hundred (good 406 upgrade wheels are like rocking horse sh*te due to the offset) with standard 15ins 406 wheels going for peanuts & a hundred at least for the interior conversion - maybe even more if you help the buyer with the swap.

Sell the ECU on Ebay - £50
Keep the floor mats for the new car & the ashwood trims, trip computer stalk & other odds & ends not fitted to the car should net another hundred between them.

Lastly map the car back to standard, but advertise it that you can do the remap should a buyer want it. If you've got the same set up as Doggy you could even copy the remapped file & do a couple of remaps for people with same engine for another few quid.

That little lot (if all goes right) should net you another £350-400. Deduct that from your £1100 & it leaves you trying for £700-750. If it'll go straight through an MOT you should get that easily at least without losing too much money on all the upgrades & you also get to see the good stuff go to a good home.

Looks nice, but I'd be reluctant to go over £2k. There was a 2.2 HDi SE estate with 85k that only went for £2500 not so long ago.

Wasn't planning on paying over 2k
TBH a 2.2 HDi SE Estate is actually what i'd prefer
Not overly fussed on mileage if it's slightly above average, as I only do about 6k a year so would bring the average down

In which case, wait for a 2.2 & if you're going to go for it, start work on setting the Plodmobile back to standard while you wait. Gives the 2.2s time to come down in price, stops you losing too much on your car & you still get good use out of the old girl while you make a few quid back on the upgrade bits.

Could you imagine how pi**ed you'd be if you sold the Plodmobile now for £800, bought that 110 SE for say £1900 & then found a really nice 2.2 for similar money & loads of people on here posting looking for leather interiors etc?

Sounds like the best all round solution to me.

I know owners like that. One chopped in his Golf GTi for a TT because he felt the GTi was pinking slightly at 3850rpm. VW had engineers from Germany sent over to test it, and they couldn't find anything wrong.
The other has a Vectra VXR that needed one alloy renewed due to a chip, and he replaced all four.

I know your pain, the cars I end up buying seemed to have been ran by someone who doesn't give a damn. Even if they are advertised as "mint" they rarely are.

I've applied for a loan from the bank

Thus if it goes through, the car is up for sale

Might even try to trade it in, as the Car i'm looking at is at a trader
Would seem a shame to let it go that way though

I've had some rear calipers refurbished, I painted them up, and then fitted along with new QH pads, and new QH rear discs of which i've painted the hub section

I've also had the rear spoiler repainted since originally posting this thread

Front calipers painted last week

The painted hubs and calipers really make the alloy wheels stand out

The heated seat capability has almost all been fitted, but will be finished before sale

New pollen filter in boot, and will also fit that in next couple of days

Colour coded boot badge fitted yesterday

Wiper arms removed and repainted up in Satin Black


I will say, if you want a fast 406 diesel, with boost throughout the rev range, then this really is the car for you

MOT runs out in 3.5 weeks, but will put 12 months on it, as plan on putting it through in next week or so

I have a terrible feeling I will have spent £400 - £500 on it in last few months, and that is after spending £1700 odd last year
Don't get me wrong, this isn't because the car is unreliable, far from it, as a lot of money spent in upgrades

Is it a 407 you're going to be going for or have you got a couple of ideas in mind?

I still reckon you should have a go at getting a few quid for some of the mods & set her back to standard before sale. Especially if you may be trading in. These dealers are b*stards for knocking money off because it isn't standard, but then charging a premium for it when they sell it on. At the very least, somebody should be able to give you a few quid plus their standard wheels for your alloys.
