You mean perhaps some sort of fuel duty escalator, whereby taxes make up 57.95 on a £1.40 litre?

Oh, wait, sorry, they already do that too.

I was directing sarcasm at the government, not you lozz :)

They tax us on our cars, filling up our cars, insuring our cars, repairing and servicing our cars!

Tolls are OK if it's a strategic route that otherwise wouldn't have gotten built. Things like the M50 Dublin westlink / Dublin toll bridge and the Birmingham bypass M6 Toll. But wouldn't want to pay it every time I nipped up the road.

It would be much fairer to put the road tax on the fuel though. That way, the people that use their cars more are paying more than the poor buggers that use it once a week. It also penalises those who drive the unnecessarily big gas-guzzlers more than those that drive their little eco-boxes.

That's what I was getting at though - they *do* tax the fuel!

42% of the cost of fuel is tax. Or to put it another way, if it was treated in the same way as regular VAT, and exc. tax is 79p, fuel is taxed at 73% !!!!

They should just scrap VED as is. They're getting enough taxes through fuel, money grabbing bar stewards. All to keep their banker pals in champers and coke.

If the average car did 10k miles at 35mpg, assuming £180 a year tax they'd have to effectively put another 63p a litre on fuel.

This would put the price of unleaded up to 199.9, diesel up to 203.9

And I would be selling a petrol Honda.

I think that an overhaul needs to be done in this country.

Tax/MOT should be one thing.
The MOT needs to be more thorough and include a test drive.
The TAX should include third party insurance for anyone driving with the correct licence.
I think the government should also start a scheme making people look after their cars, not expensive things, just basic like oil changes and filter changes, maybe at the MOT?
Have some sort of scheme where during the MOT if the customer so wishes can come in and do the above themselves? I change my oil every 4k/4months, wouldn't be an issue timing my schedule to match that around my MOT.

And fuel needs to be lowered, but it aint going to happen.

As soon as I start my apprentaship I'm going to build a 1.9TD Executive D8 with a full D9 exterior! Image
Veg oil motoring all over again! Something about prepping your own fuel. You know exactley whats in it!

If every taxed/mot'd car had free thrid party insurance you wouldn't have to buy insurance, it would be an option if you wanted fully comp policys.

Sod. That.
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

The MOT being more thorough, if they failed people because of a magic tree what next, the clock being at the wrong time, air vents not in line?

Requiring the driver knows how to change oil etc. is a bit too far.

It is a useful skill for those of us who care, and I did a useful night course in the local technical college last year to learn the basics of servicing and brakes etc.

But the likes of my prettier half, she wouldn't be one for getting under a car, and is happy enough for me to do it (and previously to pay a garage) to service the car.

No what I meant was some of us hate having other people work on our cars, I for one can't stand it!
So being given the option to do it ourselves is win win :)
