Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Caravan Electrics

Post by flyerdave »

Having replaced my 1998 406lxdt with a 1997 406lxtd I would have thought that the caravan electrics would be the same. - wrong!

My 1997 car had a nice red 20amp cable just sitting there on the right hand side in the boot waiting for me. This 1996 model has a 20amp fuse in the fuse compartment but no cable that i can locate in the boot.

Can someone help me find what Peugeot have done with it please?

thanks

Found it - They have put it on the other side just to confuse me.

I am going to solder the wires this time so I get a good connection and I will also route another supply like I did with the previous car as I then have a very healthy 30amp supply (only on when engine running) which helps with the caravan refridgerator when on the move. I have found in the past that the 20 amp internal supply is not enough to power the fridge when driving. :)

Have you towed a caravan with yours Lozz as i get the feeling mine will struggle as it won't pull cleanly below 60mph in 5th gear and i don't fancy going everywhere in 4th.

No ive not towed a caravan as such something much heavier,
ive had abig trailer on the back of mine with a mini digger on it it pulled it like it was made out nothing 8)

and my mate who owned it before me towed a catering van with it burger van /hot dog thing thems abit heavier than a caravan too he didnt ave any probs ,
the 406 was in a caravan magazine at one stage reported to be one of the best caravan pullers, volvos will always be the best for towing tho imo

Single axle 1400kgs,it's not that it won't tow it,it will as long as i stay in 4th,in 5th towing or not it seems in too higher gear at 55mph as it "judders" untill you get over 60mph and then it's fine and pulls like a train.

I had a Xantia estate 1.9 td,boosted to around 110 bhp. Before the boost it pulled our old caravan like it was draging a anchor!!!After it was boosted it was better, but the engine would get very hot.I thought it got hot due to an intercooler, air con rad then the radiator behind them, with the rad getting the least airflow. It struggled with the van & the van was 1300kgs loaded & 18ft in length.
Now,my 406.When it was my Dads company car i used it to tow the above caravan. It pulled it like it was`nt there!!!
When i got it in 2006,I had it re mapped to approx 140bhp & 220 lbft.It tows like a dream.I came back from mid Wales today with the caravan.Cruise control set to 64 mph on the motorway, keeping up with traffic on the local roads.Sometimes within the first few miles of leaving a campsite,i tend to forget about the van.I`ve had 83 mph with the van on in France & Italy(the speed limit is 80 towing or not). The temp gauge can move a bit now on long hills in hot weather, but its the best tow car i`ve had.Our current van is 21ft long & weighs just under 1300 kgs.I also got 31.4mpg(acording to computer)coming home today.
By the way,a 1.9td Xantia won the caravan clubs tow car of the year award in the mid 90`s,& the 406 2.2 hdi estate won tcoty in 2002. :)

Mine will lugg down to 45 mph in 5th & still pull away cleanly with the van on,although 4th would be quicker. :)
