water in Diesel

Hello All

well I am now getting a water in diesel fuel sing illuminating on my dash

I have a 1.9 TD 1996 406 D8

interestingly i noticed when the dash was out that there was no bulb in the dash for that light.
As I have the sensor in the fuel filter housing and the dash is wired, I added the bulb but I am now getting the light illuminating intermittently at different levels of illumination.

I have drained the diesl fuel from the filter (found no water in the fuel) and even replaced the diesel filter but i am still getting the light illuminating intermittently

Is this an indication of a poor circuit (poss broken wire) or faulty sensor or might it be telling the truth??

by the way the car is running fine

at the bottom of the fuel filter house at the front you will see a screw type valve , this should have a pipe running off it and just hagning down in front of the engine.

slowly undo the valve untill you see diesel come out. let it run out for 10 or 20 seconds and that should clear any water .

obviously let the car stand for a short while so the water settles to the bottom.

heres a pic arrowed red. unscrew that valve untill diesel/water drains.

this is mine. i lost me pipe when working on the car (dont ask how i lost a peice of pipe 1 meter long )

hmm ok ignore the above. i didnt read your post properly. just seen you have allready done that.

confused now tho as to what it could be.

when was the fuel filter changed ? did you fully empty the housing ? and dry it ?

I'm going with the faulty sensor or wiring, I reckon a previous owner couldn't figure it out and that's why the bulb was missing.

wonder if it could be the dry solder joint problem on the back of the speedo clocks

yes I have tried to drain the diesel fuel as explaiend - thanks
and I changed the diesel filter afterwards

can someone expalin the dry solder issue or point me to the post where it is?
i do actuall have an alternative dash so ill see what that gives (assuming they both dont suffer from the same prob)

yes i fully drained the filter housing an ddired it out inside and let the fuel evaporate before replacing the filter

i dont think there is a guide on the clocks. i will be doing 1 very soon cos my clocks are playing up again. fuel gauge is all over place.

on the back of the clocks is a circuit board and after time the solder joints become dry and crack causing problems.

you have to remove the clocks and take the circuit board out . its pretty easy with the right tools and if you take your time.

a soldering iron and solder is required. just inspect and look for dry joints. a dry joint will have a crack around the solder blob.

simply melt it with the soldering iron and join the crack back up. add solder iff needed
