Hi guys,
i picked up my latest peugeot (405 1.9td), its a tidy car but is a bit lazy starting. It takes two turns of the key to start (letting the glow plug light go out both times) Prev owner has replaced the glow plugs about a year ago, but says it made no diference to the way the car starts. Its also had a new starter motor and battery.... presumably because he's spent ages cranking it in the winter!!?? I will replace the glow plugs as a matter of course, and also the fuel filter/injector cleaner. Is there a fuse or relay i could check also!!?? Which glow plugs should i go for?? I dont want to fit cheap shite and regret it!! Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks, i've sourced some Bosch plugs for £10.20 ea... dont spose thats too bad! I have noticed this morning that on top of the Bosch fuel pump there is a small round "cap" that has been removed.. it covers a nut with an Allen key type screw in the middle with yellow paint on it ???. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with increasing..and probably more to the point DE-creasing the fuel supply to the injectors!!?? I had this on an old transit once, i blanked off the EGR and wound the fueling up on the pump and it went like the clappers. Possibly a timing issue if the prev owner has ran on veg oil!!??

First thing to check before you buy some heater plugs......
Get a jump lead and fasten it to the battery positive lead, then get someone to try to start it whilst you hold the jump lead onto the cable holding nut of any glow plug.
If it starts straight away the plugs are fine and the problem might be the timer (very common on the old 405td).
The timer is on the bulkhead at the back of the engine compartment on the passengers side.
You could try putting a screwdriver across the main terminals on the timer to bypass it....if it starts easy doing the bypass the timer is faulty.

That screw is to adjust the on-boost fuelling, nothing to do with the starting.
Yeah, i thought that was some thing to do with fueling.. ive tested my glow plugs with a test lamp and they seem fine, i then put a jump lead on one of the glow plugs from the battery positive terminal and it fired up... not instantly but it was ALOT quicker (one turn of the key with a bit of throttle)!! Does this mean the relay has gone?? I dont have an amp meter to test it.

You can test the relay with a test lamp.....put one side to the earth and the other side to the any glow plug wire....turn on the ignition and the lamp should light for a few seconds then go out, if it does, the relay is working.
I have had trouble in the past with the nuts holding the cables on the relay coming loose.
Sometimes the relay has burnt connections.
I've changed loads of these timer relays in the past.
Bigcol wrote:Thanks jasper5, where exactly is the glow plug timer in the engine bay please? i had a quick look but dont really know what im looking for!?
From my dodgy memory....I think it's at the passenger's side inside the bit between the windscreen and the engine bay or mounted at the back of the engine bay at the passenger's side.
There will be 2 thick wires held on by 10mm nuts, I think there is another connector plug with thin wires...again from memory, but haven't seen one in many years.
I've noticed something else and im not sure if the two are connected... My turbo is not spooling up at all!!?? I cant hear it "whistling" as it spools up, and there is not much power to be had. Fuel economy is normal (50+mpg on a run), but the first sign of a hill and im changing down through the gears to keep cars behind me happy
Thanks for the reply..Will that make it tricky to start? All it needs to start is full throttle, then it hunts for a few minutes... I'm presuming the turbo produces vaccum at idle? It does turn over quite quickly.. but i put this down to a new battery and starter motor.
