Gear Box Oil

Post by xplosiv »

Hi,

How do i check the gearbox oil? Asking as the shaft that hold the speedo thing into to the gearbox is leaking on mine ( so the localy stealer told me, making the speedo go funny)

should replace it but not paying £60 for it

Should i top the gearbox oil up, how do i do this?

THanks,

ANdy

Andy,
If you talking about the actual speedo sensor there is a o-ring on it that can be replaced quite easily. There is one allen bolt holding the sensor in. If you talking about the drive shaft seal with the gear that drives the speed then that is a lot more complicated.

To top up or check the gearbox oil on a manual gearbox - there is a steel cover plate on the side of the gearbox nearest the wheel. The biggest bolt towards the rear is the filler plug. I think its a 19mm. A socket with a thinnish wall works well. With the car level the oil level should be up to the bottom of the hole.
Getting the oil in is a bit tricky. I usually use a oil can with a piece of tubing on the end.
Obviously filled with gbox oil. Pump plenty in, pull the tube out wait until there is only a dribble still coming out and then put the plug back in.
