306 tdi ticking when key turned on before starting ?

hi guys,a friend of mine has a 306 she had to pull over as smoke coming from steering colum and ticking coming from somewhere.a 20a fuse was replaced be when you turn key it sounds like flashers are on untill you start engine,she also has no lights in centre ie: fan dials etc,all fuses seem to be ok, any ideas on what could be causing this ?

Indicator stalk has died, pick up another one form the scrapyard.

Regular failure on the 306.

steve they work ok and stalk seems to work fine,could it still be that ?

Had if fail on our last 2 306s. Quick test is to unplug the indicator stalk and see if the ticking stops, the smoke would have been the grease & soft plastics inside the switch melting.
