"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.

People will always chance their arm with silly offers. The way they see it is that if you say yes, they get a bargain, if you say no, it's not like they're ever going to bump into you. Should at least get the start bid though.

Please don't take this the wrong way though, but mentioning that you are a mechanic with 10 years experience when selling a car with a fault (abs rings) that needs repairing & a short MOT may not help. A lot of people (including myself in most cases) would look on that as "why didn't he fix it?" & assume that it's a very expensive (or time consuming which I think is the case with abs rings) job.

Thought you'd already replaced the abs rings anyway?

If Bailes was ever going to buy it, he already would have by now with his £6k gift coming. He's either going to get a really nice, really late 406 or (& here's the most likely) something fairly new, nice & cheap to insure. Wouldn't blame him either - a 406 is a nice car for people on a budget, but if you've got an offer of £6k to buy whatever you want, you need to aim a little bit higher than 10 year old family & fleet cars. I like mine because of what you can get for the money under £2k, but if any of my family said they'd pay £6k to buy me a new car I'd be back in a Beemer again. Bailes just has to be realistic about what he can insure at his age.

As far as selling the estate goes, with no faults & a full years MOT the car is worth £1000 minimum as long as it's presentable with no obvious damage. You may not be bothered to do the rings, but if they aren't too expensive to do, it has to be worth the hassle for an extra £200. If you're not physically able due to the arthritis, how about finding a young apprentice who can do the manual bits for you (under your step by step instruction) for a nominal fee? Puts a few quid in a novice's pocket & gives him a smidge of car maintenance experience.

problem is having the cash to do the repair and then mot it and tax it as i dont have anywhere off road to keep it anymore it has to be parked on the road.
