I dont think was an intentional trolling session, but, you did bite quite quickly at the aspersion on your manliness, I just couldnt help having a little giggle about it to myself

I have to admit i would be the same as you, stick it in the garage and let somebody who allegedly knows about these things do it, i would have a crack at it on a second car but not my daily runner, now if i could get some tuition on it i might have a go if it was on a car that wouldnt cost me the earth if i killed it, i.e a sub £1000 motor but otherwise, nope the grease monkeys can have my cash.

Never attempted a diesel though
Cost me £80 to have the belt and tensioners done 2 years back, so wasn't worth getting dirty for

i just spoke to an independant peugeot specialist garage, he said they can do belt change for £120, he said the pulleys are really good in the 406 and they take them off and check them, but they vary rarely replace them. but he said to keep clear of it as its had its best use at 160k miles. and will probably need more work than just a cam belt change. im in 2 minds what to do, i could probably get him to go my megane for the 406 and £150 cash. which would pay for the cam belt, and the bits for a service (which id do myself) but would i be giving up a good car for something that might be a shed?

on the veg oil side, i have a friend who goes to a cash and carry makro, he can get the oil in massive vats for next to nothing.

should i look out for something with a little less miles on the clock? or take a punt on this and run it for basically nothing?

Run out at 160k? My wifes 306, same engine, much of the same design running gear has just clicked passed 236k and shows no signs of wearing out.

Yeh 6 month 6k oil changes and these things go on forever

You can even use the old oil as fuel ;)

thats what i thought, there are even a few on ebay with 220k miles, still going for £300 ish. i may go and take it for a drive and see how it feels

Cam belt change for £120 id check again mate,
ask them does that include a new water pump /gates timing belt etc

watch the price go up.

timing belt kits are not cheap
if there doing it all in for £120 send me there address please

You can pick up a Dayco kit on the bay for under £50, and that selling to the public, trade prices are much better.

You don't HAVE to fit a Gates kit, the stuff motor factors sell is perfectly good.

its lion autos in royston, barnsley. they are highly reputable. been there 20+ years. it probably wont include a water pump. but even with that added on its still cheaper than my megane. if all the dash needs is a bult, is it not an LED odometer? its definitly a digital one, i would have thought if its not lighting up, theres something wrong with the screen??? am i wrong?

I usually change cars every few months, nothing really holds my interest. I've had my 406 estate for 2 1/2 years now.
