406 speedo stopped working
Hi there ....i've got a 2.0HDI estate yr 2000 W reg...nice condition car but have been unable to solve a few running probs.
1. Car is very sluggish and lacks power when i give it a bit of stick, in fact it sometimes goes into limp home mode for a while. The Maff sensor was suspected as the code reader said 'boost pressure' was at fault. I swapped this item but to no avail, still lacks power although gets up to road speed ok.
i changed the crank sensor too in case it was that was the reason....no change! Also changed the little 'denso' sensor near the slam panel which interlinks into the air intake system....still no joy. I wondered if its a prob with the Turbo??
2. The other day was doing about 30 then noticed the speedo dropped to 0 for about 10 secs whilst driving, also noticed a sudeen reduction in power while this was going on....then all of a sudden the speedo kicked in again and the car suddenly felt a surge in power like a judder as the power came back! any ideas guys please???
Thanks
Puggy

Re: 406 speedo stopped working
#2 would be the speedo transducer on the back of the gearbox - I think you already worked out it also sends information to the engine ecu about speed and the lack of this is confusing it. You could try reseating the connector first.
Not sure about #1 but sort #2 out first, there's nothing like one fault masking another

Re: 406 speedo stopped working
Hi Puggy
I have exactly the same problem with my hdi driving along and now and again the speedo drops to zero slight loss of power then a couple of seconds later the speedo goes back to original speed and the power kicks in again.
When i was in GSF the other day they looked up a new transducer and its about £24 so its not that expensive to replace. I will have to get round to fixing this after getting the other jobs done. Let me know how you get on with yours.

I know this is in French (and a BE gearbox) but it's just the pictures you're looking at: http://www.forum-auto.com/pole-techniqu ... 209704.htmpugface406lx wrote:I will look for that transducer.....is it easy to get to?...not sure what it looks like and where?
I'm not sure if a handstand down the back of the engine is possible, it's probably easier to get to from underneath...

Re: 406 speedo stopped working
GSF is the abbreviation of German Swedish French, and yes they are a large national chain of motor factors

Re: 406 speedo stopped working
Hi Guys,
Had to do this on mine, after it died on day one of a two week tour of Scotland!!
You can get to it from underneath, if you have a pair of ramps to drive up. Its a bit of a wrist killer to get out, but doable, the fixing bolt on mine was a torx screw, so make sure you have a good set to get the thing out with first.
I had a nightmare getting the new one in, cos it really blimmimn tight with a new o ring on it, I ended up using a huuuge pair of water pump pliers to ease it into position. Once in, and all connected up, everything was back working as good as ever, full power restored, lovely!
Hope this helps

Re: 406 speedo stopped working
Got the same problem on my X reg 2.0lt HDI , What's the sensor that I can remove on top of the Gear Box housing for? As I gather there are two, although it's usually the one shown here that causes problems. Mine started after having the clutch change, coincidence? Do you think?
Re: 406 speedo stopped working
Many thanks, I'll give it a go this weekend! Is anything easy to do on a 406! :-)

well, my friend is having this same issue and he's clutch was changed almost a year, he's speedo is having this same problem that it goes to 0 ...
So all of you confirm that is that transducer that is causing the issue ?

Re: 406 speedo stopped working
I've had the same problem on a 1.8 petrol T. Reg and also a 2.0 HDI. X.Reg According to my local dealership it's a regular problem the part with VAT is about £51.00. GSF is cheaper they quoted me £37 today. I've still not found out what the sensor is on top of the gearbox housing though, ( crankshaft sensor ?) Anyone know.
Re: 406 speedo stopped working
I have had the problem with the Speedo intermittantly stopping and starting for some time. Following reading this thread I bought a new sensor from GSF for about £24 and fitted it today. It has worked OK so far, but only time will now tell. My only qery is that I lost gearbox oil in removing the old sensor and had to top up. However, I am not sure that the level is right, I am sure that I put more in than drained out. You are supposed to fill the gearbox through the filler hole until oil starts to drain from that orifice. However, this is a bit meaningless when the car is jacked up on tilt.
Re: 406 speedo stopped working
My 406 has had the speedo going off and on for a few weeks.I disconnected the plug from the inducer cleaned it and put it back.I have had no problems for the last week so hopefully it was a poor connection so might be worth a try if anyone has same problems.
