Auto Dim interior mirror - Just fitted, now working

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Auto Dim interior mirror - Just fitted, now working

Post by RayneR »

Is it possible to retro fit one of these ? Does the ones from Peugeot 307 work in the 406 ?

Thank you.

yes it is possible to retro fit this.

another member put a renault laguna one in his 406.

one from a 307 will also work. if you can get it mounted on the window screen ok. its just a case of pos and neg for the sensor in the actual mirror.

I couldn't understand this very well.. doesn't the mirrors come with some kind of plug ? ( maybe i already have this ? ) Even if i don't have it .. its just a case of Positive and negative feed from the ignition or something ?

i just went into a scrapyard and bought a Megane/Laguna auto dimming mirror it is manufactured by donnelly like the ones presence in 307 406 C5 C8 807 and 607 , i was about to buy a C8 mirror from the ebay, but then i searched on the scrapy and it was a lot cheaper pics :

I will paint it in black, cuz beige doesn't match with anything on the car .. and it will cover the stains, dirt and scratches of it :P

Can i paint it with a black spray ? ( sure i will cover the sensors and the mirror itself ... )

If you're going to spray it make sure you make the cuts to make it fit first. You'll need to take an inch or so from the top part of the plastic mount cover to clear the 406 roof liner.

Hi, i wont fit the whole piece i'll just change the mirror's which i think i will have to do an hole on my mirror holder so the cables go through it ... but the hardest part is removing my whole mirror, i saw on the haynes manual that this process should be done by peugeot because we can break the windscreen glass .. Does anyone know how to remove it safely ?

IIRC it just slides up the windscreen. Pretty hard to break the windscreen doing that!

What other car's mirrors work with the 406? Can you just cut the mirror at the stem and fit anything on? If so do BMW ones fit? Was thinking early nineties like my dads beamer (e28, e36,e46)?

Hi Hangar18, i read somewhere a guy fitted an bmw mirror, but it needed some modifications .. i would advice you to look just for the ones that was mentioned in my previous post, and the ones from Laguna/megane which are all manufactured by donelly (please confirm that the mirror is from donelly ) because all of them use the same size/diameter of the attachment hole on the back of the mirror ...

And by the way i wont be painting the mirror, its risky, can damage the sensors permanently, i looked up at my interior roof and it does go reasonably well with the roof and the sunroof console/roof headlight so i wont paint it ...

Surely couldnt one fill/drill the hole to size? And how would painting damage the sensor? Isn't it backwards facing? Just tape over the sensor area?

I've done the BMW mirror into my 309 and it was a bit of a nightmare. You need to remove the mount from the windscreen, fill the mount on the mirror and sand it smooth then try and find some form of adhesive to stick the mirror to the screen. That's the bit I'm stuck at atm. Need to find some proper decent glue to get it to work properly.

The mirrors have sensors on both the front and back so it can tell if it needs to dim the mirror or not when lights are behind you. No need to dim the mirror if it's bright out.

Try carglass or a company that replace windscreens and stuff like that, surely they have a very tidy glue, well this was what my mechanic said, if it happens that the mirror holder de attach from the windscreen a company that work with glass for cars will probably have something ...

Ahh see- now that makes sense, you can't operate without taking the base off the sscreen. However- I've seen stick on replacement interior mirrors in motorists shop that're allegedly universal? :?

Ok, so I've just been to a scrappie and just took an e36 auto dimmer out and sized it up against a d8's... not happening, I left it there. Different type of fitting and ball joint completely. Fleabay tis.
