Handbrake (D9)

The Handbrake on this D9 is Doing my Head in ,

The shoes are good,
ive adjusted them up and there Both Equal both sides on the Hubs.

(Theres No Adjuster on the Handbrake-Lever,)

The Handbrake was Good after that But 2 days later its Back to How it was,
Did Peugeot Make a Handbrake lever where its on a Self adjuster. sort of a Locking pawl and ratchet type jobie? on the 406s.

this is all ican think of,
cables are new im baffled,

ideas please ,

Are the adjusters in the drum not staying put after you adjust them, or is the cable going slack?

Adjusters are staying put but it feels like the Handbrake Lever is letting go of the Tension of the cable,

The lever as gone like one of them Mk2 mondeo levers, where its on a self adjuster where if theres to much tension and it lets go and resets its self, if you know what imean

The Handbrake works but you have to pull it as far as it will go before it will hold on a steep hill,

Where abouts are you located mate, Im in Manchester, ?

Im going to have alook at the Lever and cables on this other 406 ive got coming if the Lever is the type that can be Adjusted from the inside imight just swap that over,

Do you know if the Later 03 d9 lever will fit 99 Reg D9 ?

iM thinking the one thats on mine is off a D8 somethings not right with it,

I don't know if the levers can can be swapped, but if the other has an internal adjuster I would imagine it will be different.

I can use my daughters garage in Rawtenstall for a look at what might be wrong, they have a small workshop with a 4 post ramp.

I've been curious about these handbrakes that don't work very well for a while now....my old 406 had a superb handbrake which never needed anything but routine adjustment.

ithink the Lever is knakerd, iasked the main Agents today and they said the 99 d9 is totaly difernt to the 03 d9 lever.
iasked them for a price for a new one expecting to be handing them £40 -£50 for one, ithought

oh we can provide one for you for £130

iwill have anosey round the scrap yards for one me thinks,

i went main agents for the 106. the screw adjuster thats goes across the shoes. they wanted £55 each

turned out the 106 doesnt have those screw adjusters lozz. the adjuster is on the shoe itself.

Pergo.Dealers are arip off,
iwill be getting new discs shoes and pads, shouidnt be more than £45 for the lot from the warehouse igo to,
idread tho think what the Pergo main agents wouid charge,

iwill change the centre cable too while its all in bits,
hopefully iwill have a good handbrake after all that,

ive asked a few people and theyve pretty much told me my Handbrake is Normal as there pretty much crap on the 406s anyway,
ive also been told to not waste any money on cables shoes etc as it wont make it any better,

is all that correct idunno

But ive found this on another forum and it sort of sums it all up,

I'd be catious of the advice in there of running around with handbrake on to bed it in incase the heat generated warps the discs

Iknow what you mean plod,

but il try out once within Reason lol.
But ithink your sposed to drive with handrake on to bed in Brand new shoes, not old ones thats the only confusing part,
ah well if they go up in smoke iwill have to join that forum

A more sensible way of bedding in brake shoes is to sand them off with some 40 or 60 grade production paper.

I've never had problems getting the 406 handbrakes to work properly, but what the heck do I know?
