I recently purchased some chrome dial surrounds to fit to my dash instruments from Ebay thinking it would be an easy task
can anyone advise how to remove the clear plastic from the instrument assembly without damaging it
I have a D8 406 (1996) 1.9TD

damn it, how could i miss the chrome rings at ebay ?
it really looks easy to fit and awesome .. but they are expensive too
...

But I have a D8 version not the D9 version and the nstrument clusters are different..so is it the same as shown to remove the d8 version for the plastic?

ipresume the D8 -d9 clock face removal wouid be the same,
I"couid be wrong on that tho,
Hopefully A D8 owner will confirm this,

ithink Gary 406 Fitted chrome Dial rings on his d8 so it might be worth asking him,

me and dave (plod) have done this. its not easy. it takes time and effort BUT i found the chrome surround for the fuel and temp dial catched on the dial itself and wouldnt allow it to move.
heres a pic of mine , to be honest i wouldnt bother trying this because you will probably find out the same as me, the fuel and temp ones wont work cos they touch the dials.
altho dave (plod) succeded in all chrome dials. (see 2nd pic)

They look nice thems,
But at the price ithink there charging to much, Ebay prices are a joke anyway,
iwas thinking of making some out of that chrome stuff you put on House windows that window leading stuff,
it might go rusty tho

I guess they are expensive for what they are, but it don't half freshen it up, and because of that, I think they are worth it
They were a tad loose, and I mean only a tad loose, so I made sure that the bottom half of each ring was secured first, before working around the rest
I don't know if Gary did his differently and hence had a problem, but doing it my way, I have had no issues

The difficulty I am having is to remove the perspex from the front...
I have been able to dismantle all the clocks and currently have them placed backwards so I know they will fit.
But wats the technique of removing the front perspex without cracking it? ..is it glued or is it just catches and if so where exactly..it does not seem that easy or pobvious or is it another technique altogether

If D8 clocks are anything like D9 clocks, then it isn't easy. The first 2 times I did it (with spare clocks) I broke at least one of the clear plastic lugs, but the third time I took my time & everything stayed as it should. The main thing to remember is that the black plastic of the instrument surround is more flexible than the clear perspex, so rather than trying to push the perspex out with a screwdriver, use a small one to try to prise up the black plastic bit & push the perspex lugs with your fingers.

I never took the clear perspex away from the black plastic
I had to pass the rings through the apertures, and then fit
Very fiddly, but definately do-able
