Alternator

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Alternator

Post by Blue2 »

Hi all, I have recently replaced my alternator on my 2.0 HDi 52 plate due to the last one whinning. Although this one doesn't whine and seems to be charging, the battery light and charging fault used to flash up every now and again, but now it's on most of the time ( which is most annoying ). Has anybody come across this problem and if so can anyone can offer me any advice on how to put it right, I would be most grateful.

Hi,
Strangely im having the same problem,
have you noticed any other Poltergeist type Activity?
EG: Heater blower going abit weird,
or Brake fluid low warning popping up ?

seems the Battery charge fault throws up if theres adrain on power somewhere,
icarnt suss out why mines doing it,
next thing im checking is the Earths and wiring under the battery,
after that im out of ideas :?

The obvious first step would be a thorough check of all the connections between battery & alternator, including all associated earths.

If you manage to catch it while it's misbehaving, try to compare voltages at battery & alternator output terminals.

big writing
if your near someone with a pp2000 plug it in and see exactly what it shows up as the fault.
but can you test if the altenator is charging, with a multimeter it should be about 12v with the car off, when the cars running it should be up about 14.5v.
i had an altenator problem on an old 309 it whined, and the one that i replaced it with had been burnt out (it could have been wired up wrong previously) and although theres no whine it just wont work.

Thanks FARMERPUG, the BIG WRITING is due to me not seeing so good, haha. I have recently purchased a PP2000, but I'm still trying to figure it out, as it didn't come with any instructions of how to use it ( that'll teach me to buy the cheaper option, I suppose ) Happy motoring.

Why don't you change the font size or screen resolution?
