I'm told the tanks are anti-syphon
Hi supafrisk,

My mum did the same thing to are 2001 plate 406 HDi, and we managed to syphon all the petrol out. Yes she managed to fill the car full (70L), not sure if pug installed an anti-syphon thing after this year. At the time the RAC man reckoned that it would be ok, even though the car had done a few miles and died, the car did 20/30k and we sold it.

I have no idea if it will damage the engine if you keep running it, maybe try to syphon the tank, that way you limit damage either way.

Oh dear Supa, I am affraid this is not good, not good at all.

I know I lark about a bit on here but please take this seriously.

You should NEVER run a HDi with ANY petrol in the mix.

The High Press pump relies totally on the Diesel for lubrication, the petrol will clean away the oily Diesel and this will result in the metal components of the pump effectively rubbing together and wearing prematurely.

This will effect the pressure the pump developes and will lower the overall performance as the injector spray pattern will be effected.

The car is still likely to run after this episode but the pump will have suffered an assault.

The louder noise you can hear is the Petrol mix effectively 'exploding' in the cylinders as it meats the highly compressed hot air, this is also detrimental to a Diesel unit as Diesel does not explode in the cylinders like petrol does.

Tis a sad day........

Me, personally I would drain the whole tank, change the fuel filter and replenish tank with Diesel and a bottle of fuel conditioner (Forte) and see how it goes, you can get a Fuel pressure reading off the ECU during a code read and this may well show a drop in normal operating pressure giving you a choice of what to do.

Some, would get rid quick :|

You probably will get away with it, as long as you don't use it until it's sorted out.

Petrol will damage a Diesel pump if given the chance.

There must be some kind of baffle plate where the filler tube meets the tank, so that fuel can spill over it but it stops a pipe from simply being lowered down the tube staight into the drink!

I'd be surprised if you couldn't get a hose down there somehow? but not sure.

Jap fuel tanks have a drain plug like an oil sump, don't know if puggs have one? is there a fuel hose connection at the bottom of the tank that can be frigged up to drain it?

If you use the fuel pump to pump the tank empty, you'll kill the pump :cry:

I think you're gonna have to bite the bullet and call out the breakdown people they can do their magic tricks and empty the tank, pump all the tainted fuel out of the fuel lines, then reprime the system.

I don't know the specifics regarding each engine but I do know for a fact that running a diesel engine with ANY petrol in it is a really bad idea and will certainly do long-term damage, if not short term too.

The only other thing I would've suggested is to kep topping up the tank with diesel, daily. But I do know that petrol can potentially seriously damage a HDi pump, so best just to get rid of the lot and start again.

Always paranois about that as I've got a diesel and my wife's is a petrol. I make a habit of looking at the pump, but normally just after I start pumping. Better then though than at the end.
