very poor mpg 2.0 hdi exec est

hi,does anybody know why my car is very poor on fuel around town,the needle on the fuel gauge was a fraction before the halfway line after putting £30 in the tank in midweek(the fuel light was not on.the needle was just below quarter before i put fuel in) ,ive just done 100 miles and the fuel light is about to come on.surely this is not right but the trip computer is saying im averaging 40.3 to the gallon.ive had the car 3 years its done 150000,history upto 125000.is there anything i could check or something to find out the cause,thanks steve.

You couid have a faulty Fuel gauge perhaps?
Mines been Acting weirdly,
if idont keep it above half a tank the gauge is all over the place,
ive ran it on Reserve just to see how far it wouid go on the Red light, My guess was £15 Reserve
£20 was just enough to get it out of the red, Massive reserve on these things,

the sender unit is all one unit housed within the lift pump in the tank ,
you couid try the Bsi Reset and see if that helps if any,
ihad the Battery lead off mine for over 2 hours the other day and that seems to help clear some of the Electrical gremlins mine had,

The 406 Gauges are never acurate tho theres been afew members on here noticing same thing as your self,

hi again lozz,we seem to be focusing on the sender unit is that the only problem it could be or could there be something more serious within the engine.you say the sender unit is in the lift pump but how do i get to that do i have to go underneath the car or through the boot.are they simple to fit and is there any way i can tell its faulty?steve.

the unit is accesed from under the back seat,
there is ametal plate covering it held in place with Rivets,

Last time it was serviced? When was the fuel filter last replaced? Worthwhile sorting the simple stuff before looking at more expensive stuff.

Also, I've had Peugeot's most of my driving life and tend to use the fuel guage more as a rough indication than an accurate guide. The 306 I've got at the moment will do the best part of 200 miles before the needle even thinks about shifting from the full position, but then it heads south pretty rapidly! Just filled it up (again) today and getting about 48mpg, not bad considering I live in the middle of the Pennines.

I should try recording the real MPG using full tank refills first.

There's been some discussion on the reliability of the trip computer (it seems pretty good) on here recently.

To be honest 40MPG around town sounds much like mine.

Even if you drive carefully, It's a big old barge!

You say the light 'is about to come on' , but howdo you know it is due on ?????? It might be another hundred miles before it does !!
