New Key Needed

My remote key died today. Got a replacement button for it a while ago, but the bloody thing kept falling into the casing & I'd have to dig it out. Well, dug it out today & now the button has come off of the circuit board.

What's the current going rate for a new remote key at dealers & independents (if they can do it)? Mine is the older type with the funny shaped end (not the trapezoidal later ones). I've got the little card with the code on still so hopefully that'll help, but I've heard it's a PP2000 job which suggests that independents may not be able to add it with their generic locksmith software. Don't fancy buying a key off Ebay as they're all old keys from scrappies with a new blade rammed in. Although I do like the look of the flip type ones that are for sale on there, but all the ones I've seen so far are only suitable as a replacement for the later key type.

Also, don't those bloody door locks get stiff when you use the remote all the time? Sprayed some WD40 in there earlier & seems a bit better now, but I thought I'd break it the first time I did it!

you can buy a new button from ebay if your soldering up to the job, or there are people offering to replace the button for you. Adding a second remote to my d9 has proved impossible so I would recommend trying to fix your existing board rather than trying to get a new key programmed in.

That repair service looks like a good deal Waue, it might be easier than having to recode a new one to the old bus.

Funnily enough, I was contemplating fixing it myself. Bought a small soldering iron yesterday (my one is massive) as I managed not to lose the little micro-button. But before I go buggering about with that, I'd rather have another key ready to use in case I make a balls of it.

ask Frank (Farmer P) he had a spare one iirc,

The button fell inside mine but ipulled it out and stuck it in place with Surgical tape as ididnt fancy taking it a part
had a funny feeling these where fragile, it works fine but iwill invest in a new one eventualy, got Quoted £85 for one incl programing etc,

Don't know if it's relevant, but one of my colleagues had to buy one for a 407:

Key £100, 'recovering' PIN code £25, programming £50.

That's why I felt fairly chuffed getting my PIN FOC & re-synching it myself.

Not had to replace a key so far, but the wife's put it somewhere safe......

That was a Quote from a company called Keyfax,
ithink the mainstealers wouid be pricing up around £150 all incl programing etc, id guess,

Not far off. Our local dealer reckoned £130ish including the programming. Sounds a lot, but to be honest I may just take that option as there's no messing around. Then I'll probably send my original off to that Ebay guy to get repaired & have 2 remotes.

Correction - he's just phoned back with the actual price. £175!!! Plip part is £80 on it's own, programming is about £50. Might have to find an auto locksmith. He did say though that he doesn't think the car will store more than 2 keys at a time. Does anybody know if this is accurate? If that's true, I can save myself a few quid by getting the blade taken out of my non-remote key to use in the new remote. If not, then I'd rather have the 3 working keys.

I think he's right - the 'learn' sequence, like the re-synch in the handbook, will cater for one or two keys.

Bit of a bad news, good news then. If I can only have 2 keys, I may as well just send the other one off for repair. Have been looking at those flip key kits on Ebay though. Only thing is, they only seem to support the later fatter type keys. Anybody ever tried it with the old type keys yet?
