I've just bought a 2001 (y reg) 406 2.0 Hdi LX estate after finally deciding after 7 years to give up my 1996 406 1.9 TD Saloon which never let us down. What I find frustrating is an aftermarket stereo has been fitted to the new car and we would like to try and put an original head unit back in. (Did it inthe old car with multichanger no prob!) BUT we cannot find out what make/model it would of originally been and would it be multichanger compatible? If anyone can tell us please would be most grateful. Peugeot can only tell us part number and it would cost over £200.
Can anyone also tell us should the head unit be coded or Vin coded?
Would also be happy if the steering stalk worked with it. This doesn't seem to have a separate wire running but joins up with the wires to go straight in the back of Head Unit.
Please, please, please help. Any info much appreciated.
Your head unit would probably have been a Clarion head unit, probably with a tape deck on it. Being an LX it won't have the CD changer in the boot by default.
You can get these head units from eBay but you need to be careful - they are coded, but to your VIN, so you'll need to supply your VIN to whomever sells it to you and they'll code it before they send it (if they say they don't do that, then don't buy it from them). Also, the Clarion head unit came in several different versions, including one which does not have a built-in amplifier, but instead is designed to output to a JBL amplifier in the boot - your LX will not have one of those.
I don't want to specifically give you links to eBay auctions for these because I don't feel confident enough to tell you which ones will definitely work in your car, and therefore don't want to accidentally waste your cash - but maybe someone else from here will tell you which one to buy.
Incidentally, the stock head units aren't very good; a decent after-market head unit really makes a big difference to the sound quality, even through the standard Harman speakers your car was fitted with. I bought a Sony MEX-BT3600U head unit with Bluetooth streaming audio/handsfree built in - very good head unit, big improvement over the stock HU that was in my old LX saloon and it's now in my SE Coupe.

Many thanks for your answer. Thats more than I've been able to find out so far. If anyone can guide us as to the model we need to be looking for it would be appreciated. Talk about opening a can of worms!

you wernt missing much then lol,
my cd changer went straight in the wheelie bin,
they suffer with Water ingress, ithink there in a bad place, they shouid of mounted them under a seat like any other Propper car manafacturer wouid do
I don't want to attract attention to any ICE in my car, so would like to retain a standard head unit - yeah sad I know
I do however want to add Iphone compatibility
Thus "if" I had an indash cd player, I still have the option to play discs, but with the option of the changer in the boot, I could ditch it, and use the connection to connect to the phone

Update on Which Head Unit. We've found out from the plugs that it must be a Pre 2000 model but still not what Make/Model.
Have tried to send Trem1 a PM. Don't know if you've got it or not. I've never been on one of these sites before and I had a problem sending it. If you could let me know please ta very much. Beginning to think its too much hassle but will perservere a bit longer.
