Re: 6 speed 2.0hdi
I'd go for the 6 speed box from the 407 diesel as long as the bolts on the bell housing match (not sure if that's the same box you are on about). Dunno what the ratios are like compared to the standard 5 speed box though.
Re: 6 speed 2.0hdi
wonder if you can fit one to the 2.1?

Re: 6 speed 2.0hdi
All the 406's use the same mountings IIRC, so if it fits the HDi, it'll fit the 2.1 or 1.9. That's why I'm watching this thread with some interest. I've been keeping my eyes open for a cheap 6 speed box from a 407, but the words rocking, horse and excrement all spring to mind.

Just been having a squint, none of the part numbers match up, although the gearchange for the ML5C looks similar (3 cables). The ratios should be ok (although from what I remember don't expect much of an overdrive), it's just fitting the damn thing - how much did PSA change?
It really depends if you've got the time, space and funds to give it a try, as far as I know it's not been done (yet) so you'll kind of be on your own (although feel free to moan on here as necessary

Re: 6 speed 2.0hdi
Biggest issue is going to be whether Peugeot made this box by using the 5 speed box and simply adding an extra gear (which is how they created the GTi6 box). They did this by basically sticking the 6th gear in a modified bell housing on the end of the box, this reduced clearance between the tyre and box and resulted in reduced lock. Hopefully this one is a puropse built 6 speed box and is hopefully no wider than the standard 5 speed box.
Other than that, I thought all XU blocks had the holes in the same place? I.e. a BE box will physically fit in the holes of a ML5T box for example.

Re: 6 speed 2.0hdi
I'd be interested to see how this pans out.
Anybody know if a taller top gear would give the clutch more of a pasting?
(BTW If we all go to Gaydon, we could measure up Disco's ML6 while he's not looking).

Re: 6 speed 2.0hdi
Has anyone checked to see what the gear ratios are? Having one more gear dosent mean it has a higher top gear, it may be closer ratios.
Good project though. I would be very impressed if it bolts straight on, but you never know. And what about things like drive shaft lenghts?
And would it make it a modified car as per a previous thread. Just thinking of the insurance company, ''you've done what with the gear box sir?''

Re: 6 speed 2.0hdi
You're probably spot on with that. The 407 I drove when they first came out didn't seem to be any taller geared in top as was the 6 speed in the TDCi Mondeos, & if the Hyundai & Renault 6 speeders I had on hire recently are anything to go by, you'll be hard pushed to find a 6 speed box which actually raises the gearing at the top end.Busman wrote:Has anyone checked to see what the gear ratios are? Re: 6 speed 2.0hdi
my alleged top speed is 134mph in sixth, dunno about the revs at that speed but by the time i get over for Gaydon i will be able to tell you as im coming through germany
but the box is definitely shorter in the rest of the gears, first is neigh on useless.
