which 406 ?
i'm thinking of buying a new car in about 1-2 months. its definately gonna be a 110HDi at the least. or if one is available when im buying i will go for the 2.2HDi ....
i've been looking at SE's but which is best between SE and exec.... whats the difference....
wish i had £2k now i would go and look at this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Peugeot-406-2-2HD ... 1373774448
i relly like that ... as well as it being the 2.2 is even better ...
i will have a budget of about £2k in about 1-2 months all going well....

Re: which 406 ?
For cars registered after March 2001 the 2.2 costs £190 per year to tax and the 110 (and 90) cost £130 per year.
The 2.2 has longer final drive, which should make up the difference if you do a lot of motorway miles. Round town though the shorter ratios in the 110 are likely to be more useful.
The 90 has some advantages too, but admittedly I'd have a 110 if I was shopping for a 406 HDi.
You get a much better trip computer in the cars with sat nav. (All such cars are multiplex COM2000 jobies, so if that is an issue for you then tough

Does the 2.2 not have FAP?
Went to look at a 2.2HDi Auto Exclusive mk1 C5 once, had all the toys but too many faults on the mfd

Re: which 406 ?
it is.
I had a 1.9 XUD before my HDi 90, and the difference was very noticeable. Feels like there's much more torque at low revs -- and there's loads more again on the 110.
I agree; its a complete non-issue.Gary406 wrote:the comm2000 doesnt worry me

Re: which 406 ?
The XUD ZXs I owned didn't have any engine mount issues, whereas the HDi 406 did.
Were the XUD mounts stronger, or did they have to contend with less lateral forces?

Re: which 406 ?
Engine months on the 2.0 HDi and XUD are the same. Afterall they are the same basic block.
XUD's will trash their engine mounts more so than the HDi, bearing in mind the HDi is a much smoother lump.
Go for the 2.0 HDi 110 if I was you
Or how about getting another D8 and getting a 2.1 Executive?

Re: which 406 ?
Depends what your priorities are Gary.
If it's running costs, I'd opt for the 110 as it is more efficient than a 90, having an intercooler and taller gearing.
If you're looking for performance, get a 2.2, (don't worry too much about the FAP/DPF issue, you can remove them very cheaply now).

Re: which 406 ?
The MOT test is a smoke test which a de-fapped 406 will still pass. I'm not sure if they test for polluting gases on a diesel? if the test gets really strict then it may be an issue but not at the moment.
Don't disregard a really tidy 90bhp car and then get it remapped to 120bhp! you get a simpler car with no dual mass flywheel and 'better' or simpler rear brakes but all the power you need - just avoid the siemens pump version I think, can't be tinkered with easily.
Upon purchasing a 110 car my FIRST job above all else would be a careful examination of the rear lower engine mount - if that lets go it leads to a whole lotta unnecessary expense
don't assume a 53 or 04 plate will be immune from problems, it will be nearly 8 years old after all.

Re: which 406 ?
As far as choosing between an SE & Exec goes, an Exec will be easier to find & gets full leather as opposed to the half leather SE interior. Yes the SE seats are a little bit more supportive at the sides, but in hindsight, I'd rather have got the full leather now as the middle bit of the half leather seats isn't as easy to keep in good order as full leather would have been.
If the car stays, I may even be making the change to full leather.

Re: the HDi 90 rear brakes.
Mine had discs with handbrake drums in the centre. Still cost over £300 to get the handbrake to hold to get it through an MOT.
Also, the possible remap to 110-120bhp wouldve cost £250-£300.
