Old man has two Mondeo ST220's as company cars.
I miss the sound of the V6 howling away! Great engines must be said!

Would love an ST220, but I think the MPG would be a step too far for me hehe

I don't think there much of an MPG difference? My Dad used to get about 30-33mpg on the motorway and 24mpg around town, right down to single figures thrashing it

I'm averaging 24MPG at the mo with urban driving to work and back.
Just filled the tank up - £72 and range shows 370 miles.

Bulls**t!
I'll give that tank 250 miles, if I'm lucky :)

24mpg out of a V6 Mondy around town. I'd love to know how everybody manages it - I used to get 25 out of a 2005 1.8! Would hit 40mpg on the motorway at a steady 70 though.

I don't go over 3k revs and try and stay in 5th when I can.
When accelerating (gently) I skip 2nd and 4th gears but that's easy to do with a bigger engine.
At 30 mph in 5th I'm doing just over 1k revs.

Of course sometimes I can't stop myself and have to make the V6 sing :cheesy:
It's also good for the engine over the long term to give it some beans on occasions, as long as it's warmed up (that's my excuse anyway  )
I just try and build up the speed rather than floor it, then snap off, floor it and snap off.

A lot of it is down to the car itself, mines happy cruising in the lower end of the 1-2k rev range.
Smaller engined cars may not like it.

I'd still like to get the MPG higher but not sure I can, or even if I'd want to drive in the way that will return more economy.
TBH economy isn't why I bought the car

Try instead of using low revs using not much throttle.
Theres no point being just over 1k because the engine will be sticking extra fuel in to make sure it dosen't stall. Try keep it between 1,750rpm and 3,000rpm with no much throttle, let the revs build gradually.
Then when you upto speed drop it in the gear which is closest to 1,500rpm.
Although a big V6 engine may not sound like it's labouring, the ecu will think it is.

I've been driving with this method and...

Usually I get 350miles to a FULL tank, and thats been mainly around town with abit of motorway driving back and fore chipenham.
Even when I went to Yorkshire stuck at 56mph I still only managed 430miles to a tank full!

So used to poor MPG with the 1.6, maybe I should just get a V6 Mondie instad of a TDDi 115

That is impressive.
Interesting what you said about not hearing the engine labouring at low revs - you can't hear or feel the engine struggling at all.
I'll have a go at keeping it between 2k and 3k more.
AS long as I keep it below 3.5k when the secondaries open up it should be ok.

Find it surprising you only say 24

Years ago my bro had a XR4i and I had a XR4x4 both with 2.8 engines
He used to get 25 mpg and due to the 4wd system I used to get 20mpg

Surely technology has moved on enough that a 2.5 v6 in a more modern guise can do a lot better than the old 2.8

I would say that the new Mondeo is huge compared to the Sierra.
New Mondeo is bigger than a mk3 Granada, whereas the Sierra is Focus sized, if not smaller than the new Focus!

Yes the MK3 Mondy is a pretty big car and weighs in at nearly 1500kg.
That would probably be why the MK3 is about 1/2 second slower to 60 than the Mk2 with the same engine (gearing may play a part as well.)
And probably has worse economy.
More airbags, more safety features, stronger body etc generally means newer models are heavier than the model they replace.

Also the engine has been used for years in Fords, it's not a new engine.
It's just been improved and refined over the years but it's still the same basic engine.

Since I've filled the tank the trip computer has suddenly started behaving and the figures are more realistic.
I did 13 miles today and the range dropped by 15 miles, before fill up it was dropping by about 30 miles for every 13 miles I did.
It also now says 21.4 MPG average, which I think is probably more accurate than 24MPG.
If it stays this accurate and I get around 350-370 miles to a tank I'll be very happy :cheesy:

Every car maker is the same, they got rid of the "big" cars because the previous customer base was buying German, so they made the "mid size" cars "big".
At least Peugeot is honest about where the 40x replacement is heading, admitting it is increasing in size and calling it 508.

At the other end of the market, the superminis tend to get bigger. Thats why the Ka, Fox, Arosa etc. were marketed.
Peugeot however seemed to have bucked the trend, as the Toyota-based 107 is smaller than the 106!

Well as a little update.
After a tank fill up and computer reset the computer seems a lot more accurate now.
Range was 370 miles on a brimmed tank, the range is dropped by pretty much the same amount the trip computer is going up so good so far.
Average MPG is now 22.

But still I'm happy if I get 370miles out of a tank with urban driving :)
