Don't worry, its probably just a phase.
I can insure an E36 325TD with only 115bhp, but the E46 is a much better car.
And if I did have an E36 325TD I'd be annoyed every time I saw a 325tds that I didn't get one of those.

Besides, a remap on the 318d brings it upto 150bhp... fairly nice figure that :D

Believe it or not, some of the 4 cylinder models drive better. When we used to have the old 80s E28 5 Series, I had a 520i & my Dad had a 518i. Whilst there wasn't much that would touch my old 535i, when it came to the smaller engines the 1.8 in Dad's was much happier to rev & a lot easier to drive than my 6 cylinder 2.0.
Not that much has changed now either - I tested a couple of E46 3 Series estates a few months back (when I found that there's less useable boot space than in the saloons) & the 2.0 4 cylinder in the 318i was much smoother than the 2.2 6 cylinder in the 320i with massively better economy to boot.

The 406 for sure.

More exclusive then the "me too" 3 series.
Looks better in my opinion.
People let you out of junctions.
Don't strangely feel the need to constantly "get one over" on everybody else on the road.

I'm with Bailes I'm afraid. Rear wheel drive is much nicer, but the main thing for me is the solidity of the Beemers. You have to jump out of the 406 & straight into a similar aged Beemer to notice it. I get out of the 406 & close the door with a tinny thud. Dad's BMW door closes with a solid clunk.

Even Mr Rees and the HPI mobile will be gone in another year or so

I just begrude paying that much for insurance when I can have a much much better car for much less?

Sorry are you still referring to that 318 thing?

I've seen 2000-era 3 serieses with a lot worse rust than even my 406 ever had!

They seem to blow head gaskets at will.

It'll be poverty spec because everything is an option and for a 318 the original buyer was buying for the badge and not the luxuries.

No doubt a lot will have been owned 2nd hand at one point by some boy racer who thought he was "gangsta innit".

And RWD isn't much use on anything with less than 6 or 8 cylinders.
Bit of loss of grip it'll just spin you into a tree and you wont be able to drive it in the snow.

My brother was telling me that the turbo on his 1.8 Seat Leon Cupra R had gone, and he was thinking of trading it in for a BMW. I told him that the entire world of non-BMW owners would look at him in his new BMW and think "you're a cock". He opted to replace the turbo and just get on with it.

Thats why I get a 318d M-Sport ;)
Cruise control, climate control, alacantara M-Sport seats, trip computer etc etc.

The 318d just a deturned 320d. So when insurance lets me I can get it mapped and have the same power at the 320d?

Either way I won't be changing cars for another year, I quite fancy a B6 Passat too, are they RWD? I dunno.

I donm't care about the image a car gives me, heck I got called an old man many many times in my 406, but I still had a better car than any of my friends :)

If a car looks good, drives well and is reliable. I'm happy, regardless of the image I give.

I felt the same when I was driving a 5 Series with L plates & a year later driving a 2.8i Mk2 Granada while they all had their Fiestas & Novas

Even the B5/B5.5? I thought they were RWD cause the engines were Longnitudunal in the bay? :(

The passat is front wheel drive, but has the engine mounted long ways, some have 4WD they say 4motion on them.
My dad had the one before the b6 which was a great car, properly well made and the highline was full of kit it even drove well it had sports suspension the thing handled great. We looked at the b6 and it just wasnt as good, didnt feel the same to drive, but it definatley wasnt as well made, and then my aunt bought one which has had quite a bit of electrical issues with the key, and handbrake and now a turbo at 70k miles, she said it was pinking and after a mechanic looked at it the turbo will need replacing.

TDi turbos seem to go on a regular basis.
The Octavia taxi drivers must know a cheap turbo source?

I never knew that i thought TDI engines were reliable. Is there a difference in the 2.0 and 1.9 apart from the 0.1l of displacement.
Also with VAG cars is it TDI or TDi

The 1.9 is an old PD engine, uber reliable!
The 2.0 litre is a stupid engine, common rail which fries it's injectors at a price of £200 a piece! Although there may be a recall comming up for this!
