Rear and Front brake caliper bolts sizes? 2.0 HDI 406 W reg

Post by pugface406lx »

Hi there,

Just about to change the brake pads on my 406 hdi but come across a problem with rear caliper bolts, one is a socket head bolt at the top bolt fixing, which means I will need an allen key tool (maybe a hex head male allen key 'socket drive' tool to fit my socket set, Does anyone know the size etc of the allen key needed or halfords item (presumably they will have one to suit my socket set). (The bottom fixing socket size will also be useful if anyone knows it? looks like 16MM OR 5/8")

Not took the fronts off yet, are there any surprises in store for me on that one?

cheers

Don't remember anything odd about the back ones, (which means mine needed something I had to hand), but the fronts needed a T55 torx bit to remove the calipers.

The screw on the back is hex, it was just one of the ones in the box with my impact wrench - I'd try measuring it but, with my eyes... :(

Fronts are just 12 or 13mm bolts, you usually get a new set with thread lock on them in with the pads but you only need to undo the bottom one and swing the caliper up & out the way.

Thanks for the info guys, 16mm socket worked a treat on the lower fixing on the rear caliper, the top one was a Allen key 6mm, so i bought one of the halfords socket tool ones with the male allen key at the business end.
What I have found however is that the calipers at the back are sticking now the new pads are in and the brakes are holding to such a point that the wheels are very hot and brakes are smelling....any one else have this problem?...are there any easy cures other than putting up with it , I did back off the piston obviously to get the new pads in but it feels like i have a small parachute open at the back pulling me back when Im on the move!!!

It sounds like the pins are seizing up, you might want to read this viewtopic.php?f=27&t=15490&hilit=pins
