ABS and break 'bumping'
I have an intermittent and long standing issue with my ABS system.
It seems that sometimes when I travel over or around 60 for more than a few mins the ABS system will fail with a visual indicaton on the dash and a beeping. When this happens I have confirmed the ABS is not working with breaking tests. The system will continue to not work untill the car is left sitting for a few hours. When it is turned back on after these few hours the fault warnings will show again for about 30 seconds and then vanish and the ABS will work again.
This used to happen when motorway cursing at 70 for about 5 mins but it stopped totally for a few months and now its started happening after only 30 seconds at 60. But it is still intermittent and dose not away happen.
My other problem which i think must be related is that occasionally under light/medium breaking there will be a bumping sound which slows down as the car dose so must be directly related to the rotation of one of the wheels. I think its coming from the front but its hard to tell and when it dose happen the car seems to loose some breaking ability. This can be cured by lifting off and breaking again but this is hardly ideal.
Can anyone shed any light on ether of these faults and are they related? The car has been through an MOT with it with no mention so there can't be anything obviously wrong with the disks or anything.

Possibly a broken Relucter ring or a Bad abs sensor,
only way to Determine that properly is to have the car Read for fault codes, obviously there shouid be something stored if the Abs light as come on,
withought having it code Read it wouid be a Guessing game,
best start wouid be a Visual check on the 16 teeth of the relucter rings, look for cracks breaks etc

Isn't it also possible that the brake disks are warped? Does the car shake and does it feel like you're pumping the brakes when you're stopping?

Hi,
£50+ dependant on where you buy the part, (if its from pug iwouidnt like to guess,)
or cheaper option, Buy just the Relucter ring and Replace just that,
Ithink Ebay~ wouid be the Best place as a source for the part, thats if your going the D.i.y route,
Oh yeah forgot to mention, Thanks goes along way,
it dosent bother me, but a simple thankyou on forums goes along way Dosent cost nothing either,

Cheers, at the moment I don't think its worth fixing though - I will just be mindful I have no ABS

Hi.
Sorry u feel that way,
whats wrong with the 406 other than the A.b.s issue. ?
if its just that. dont let that put you off fixing it, there plenty of threads on here with info which wouid help you fix it,
if you where planning on keeping the 406, your best option is to repair the A.b.s as its part of the Mot,
Regards lozz.

Re: ABS and break 'bumping'
Its got some minor problems with one of the door locks, the aircon is knackered and I get intermittent anti-pollution faults every so often that don't seem to do anything.
It wouldn't be too expensive to get a new ring but I'm trying to save up money for a motorbike at the moment (to run as well as my 406) so don't have much to spare and the car is getting to an age (its a 51) where things on it brake. Its ignition barrel snapped off last summer and the back box of the exhaust fell off last year too so If I can get away with no fixing things I'd rather not.
I've been driving for two years at least now with no ABS and my last car had no ABS so I'm used to handling the breaks in that condition.
And its been through 2 MOTs with this problem and never a mention nor failure

Re: ABS and break 'bumping'

Re: ABS and break 'bumping'
Mine has one on each side (the near side is the one that's broken) on the front wheels - I've not checked out the back.
Sounds like your drivers side one snapped and has fallen off to me

Bloody hell , you think a 51 plate is old (lmao) mines 97 plate with just under 250k and major fault I`ve had is the front spring breaking , seems to me the newer the car the more problems arise especially electrics .My aircon is working just fine as well.Zippokovich wrote:Its got some minor problems with one of the door locks, the aircon is knackered and I get intermittent anti-pollution faults every so often that don't seem to do anything.

Re: ABS and break 'bumping'
Ahah this is just the thread i've been looking for. I have a 406 exec 2.2hdi and the abs is bumping on the pedal (knocking against my foot) what is the item that has been mentioned here with teeth or that can fall off completely? As i'm used to an old 306 with no ABS and no fancy gagetry!!
Any help much appreciated as I'd like to solve this before the next MOT.
