The Samsung has the oLED screen, the Sensation has SLCD so the Sammy has the better screen.
The Sensation has HTC Sense UI which most people prefer to the Samsung ui (Touchwiz I think)
I'd say the Sensation has the better build quality and feels better in the hand.
Both phones can be rooted but I'm nt sure which has the most ROM support - I'd guess the Sensation as the Desire still has incredible ROM support.

So both are great phones, I have a Desire at the moment, rooted and running a custom ROM and drivers my phone isn't due for renewal for another year or more.
But if I were buying now I'd probably get the Sammy for the screen then root and install a custom AOSP (Android open source project) Android ROM.
oled,slcd,ui touchwiz,rom,rooted,rom support

oLED = Organic LED - bright vibrant screens, Samsung make them and used to supply them to HTC but stopped because they need all they can make for their own phones (Samsung call their screen AMOLED but they are the same thing.)
SLCD = Super LCD, the HTC screen, not as bright or vibrant as oLED but readily available to HTC.
UI= User interface, the bit you see and interact with.
Touchwiz = The UI used by Samsung Android phones, the HTC Android phones all use the Sense UI, both phones use Android but have a completely different look on screen because of them using different UIs.
ROM = The software on the phone installed by the manufacturers including Operating system (android) and the user interface as well as the pre-installed apps.
Rooted = Android is a derivative of Linux/ Unix operating system and gaining root access is basically like God mode (or Administrator in Windows) you can change a lot more settings, as well as the interface, the version of the operating system etc.
ROM support = the custom ROMs written by home users/ developers... All free and all unlock different things on the phone have their own interfaces and options as well as often being hacked to work on different phones than they were designed for.

I'm running a rooted Desire so I have root access and installed a custom ROM that is based on the 2.3 (Gingerbread version) of Android.
Unrooted Desires run Android 2.2 (Froyo) but HTC are currently testing an official Gingerbread ROM to release for free to update all Desires over the air.

Hope that helps explain some of the jargon :)

Hi mate, I'm in the rare position of having owned both!

I currently have the Sensation, and in my opinion it's a much nicer phone all round. The S2 was much thinner and lighter, but there were things that bugged me about it. First and foremost it did not work with my organisations exchange server, which turns out to be a documented bug with the S2 when used with exchange servers that enforce encryption. The HTC has no such problem. I didn't like the much hyped Super AMOLED screen at all. I found it very harsh on the eyes, the black level details were dreadful and it had serious convergence issues (red tends to bleed out from the edges of things). I have tried two S2's and both were the same. That, and there are doubts around the long term durability of these screens, with reports of them developing discolouration over time. The Sensation has a far more natural looking screen. Lastly, the Samsung implementation of Android I found to be a lot more clunky than HTC's. People mock HTC Sense, but it does iron out a lot of the rough edges. Overall, I find the Sensation a joy to use, and I found the S2 quite the opposite.
