The Focus isn't well :-(

It's a 2007 Focus 1.6 Ti-vct.

Was leaving for a family day out Sunday morning, reversed out of the drive and started off down the street, then pressed the loud pedal at the bottom of the hill and felt no power at all, turned off the radio and told the kids to shut their cakeholes and confirmed that it was running very rough and obviously misfiring. Turned around and took it back home, had a quick look but could find nothing obviously amiss so locked it up and went out in the supremely reliable (except for the recent episode) Pug for the day

When I got home I thought I'd take a look again, secretly hoping that the automotive faries had been and sorted it while we were out, but alas not. Stuck the code reader on it and it's saying "P2303 - Ignition coil b primary ctrl circ low".

Bit of googling says that the coil is knackered, and unlike a pug they're only £36 so i've changed that but it hasn't cured it. So next step was to whip the plugs out....


WTF is that all about???

New plugs and leads next then dudes (not too bad, it's overdue a service anyway ), I'll report back!

No, it seems that water likes to track into the channel in heavy rain and fill up the wells, great design

My mate had two mk V Fiestas both of which ate a coil pack roughly every year (though he did drive them particularly mercilessly).
On one occasion, the AA man said they carry Ford coil packs round with them because they're so crap. Apparently its because most coil packs are oil cooled but the Ford ones aren't.

I know someone with a Focus who said that what happens is that rain gets in the washer jet holes, then falls down and gets into the spark plug sockets, causing corrosion.

2 ways to solve it:
- Silicon sealant around the jet holes - a temporary solution
- Get rid of the bloody Ford - a permanant solution that applies to Sam/Bailies too.

Dai, I've had this problem several times....

It's either the screenwashers letting through rainwater and the water building up inside the plug wells OR the 2 core plugs in the plug wells are leaking.

Take out your washer jets and stick loads of silicon sealer on them before refitting, stick a load more around the inside after you have refitted them.

To replace the core plugs, get some new ones from Ford and knock the old ones inside the head (don't worry they can't do any harm inside), fit the new ones with silicon sealer around them.A very easy job.

The washer jet problem is a well known problem, just google it....

Definatley looks like the problem is the water getting through the washer jets.

that second plug looks quite bad, if it was rainwater from above how is the thread getting corroded?

The girlfriends Focus-shaped 2005 Fiesta has a problem where on the clutch with little/no acceleration it feels like it is about to stall, then catches itself.

Would this be a coil pack issue?

I changed the plugs in hers and the old ones looked ok.

Changed the plugs, leads and coil. No joy?

The live runnign data said that the fuel bank had an open loop.
And the code said Coil B had a fault too?

So we dropped it into Ford

Was nice to meet Dai today, he took me around all the rough areas of Merthyr Tidfyl And I hope he enjoys his new phone

Oh and I did 41mpg going back and fore his today... 41 Well happy with that

I'm gutted we couldn't sort it but I reckon we tried everything we could have tried, I hate modern cars!!

Good mpg that, and I'm liking the phone! Next time I plugged it in to the lappy there was a whole page in that Kies thingy on syncing options, including outlook contacts and calendar, tick tick start.... done, weird! Also tried the google nav and it's pretty good
