Tem porary problem with Pug 406

Post by zocker »

Hi Greetings and thanks in advance for your thoughts. My Pug (diesel) intermittently partially fails with some of the symptoms of a damaged engine: Rattling, slightly reduced power and some (small amt of ) white smoke on acceleration. The tacho stops working. If I stop the engine and restart, all the problems stop, only to appear at some random time later...is this an electrical prob of some sort?

Many Thanks!

Need to know the engine type so that members can advise further, it's either the newer HDi or the older traditional XUD engine (1995 to 1998-ish).

White smoke is probably unburnt fuel, sounds like the ecu doesn't know where the engine's at - engine speed sensor?

That will be the XUD9 TE

http://www.pug406.com/wiki/index.php?ti ... -_1.9TD_8V

Your car will be a phase 1 (known on here as a D8), manufactured between 1995 and 1998. The engine is an 8 valve fuel-injected turbodiesel, and produces around 90 HP. You can probably run it on vegetable oil rather than diesel!

No idea what the problem is caused by, I'm afraid. Never owned any diesel.

It'll be an XUD9TE then. It'll also say on your logbook VF38BDHX?80nnnnnn, the DHX is your engine code (=XUD9TE)

If you think that's bad I've owned four and I still know bugger all about them

Btw the XUD9 is quite a simple set up with little to actually go wrong, just wait a bit and those with more experience will be along.

Right the fuel pump advance on the 406 is done by the ECU, an ill timed pump will blow out white smoke. Sounds like the ECU is mucking up the pump advance/retard?

The ecu gets it's actual timing info from the needle lift sensor on one of the injectors, (No. 2 I think). The same signal is used to generate the tacho signal, so it sounds like you have a problem with the sensor / wiring or maybe the injector.

Also, the timing control goes loopy if you don't have a good fuel supply - check fuel filter, in-tank strainer, look for signs of the pressurisation bulb going soft while the engine's running, or any leaks.

ECU is the engine control unit. I belive StevieboyTD was running his 1.9 without his lift sensor plugged in.
