I noticed that too and that was the late 90s-early 2000s. As an upper 6th (7th year) prefect, having to ask one of the form tutors for advice when taking cheek from a 1st year!
Thirded, we looked up to the prefects when we were in year 7 but by the time I was one (2003) we were shown sod-all respect, the only benefit was we got our own room at lunch times with a microwave and fridge!

Definitely the 6th form centre was better than the canteen.

1.10, waiting in queue til 1.30, getting lunch, sitting down to eat it at 1.40, having to be back in class by 1.55. Shambles.

Was always jealous though in 6th form of the ones whos parents could buy and insure cars for them.

I started school in 2003, then in the last year 2010 i was a prefect, having to do things like watch for shoplifters at the dinner queue, or even making sure there was no people skipping the dinner queue was a very difficult thing i just got abuse from them and had to get the teachers to solve problems, it wasnt just me all the prefects had the same problems.

I had the same issues, but I'm not exactly the most assertive person in the world (ie. I'll never be allowed to own a BMW or Audi), but my confidence as a teenager was rock bottom.

Trying to get kids to stop queue jumping or dropping litter was difficult. Even when I gave out lines (which was about all we could do), chasing them down and then actually getting the thing off them wasn't easy.
In the end I gave up on some and invented other strategies such as when they were running down the corridor, shouting "WAALKKKKK" in the style of the vice-principle, and watching them just immediately slow down.

I remember trying to save up while waiting for my GCSE results. Tried to get a part time job, but as all I had before the results was an 11 plus result, and no experience, no shop wanted me.
I tried to budget how much running a wee car like that Micra or a Metro would be, car itself was cheap, but the insurance would have been £3000. Back in the late 90s before the current insurance scandal.

But unlike the rioters and looters, I did not wreck other's cars because I didn't have one and felt underprivileged or somehow hard done by.
I just got by, getting the bus in school (hence why I hate bus transport now), then during university had a part time job and did 12 hour shifts 6 day a week for a summer in 2003, bought a cheap Clio 1.2, insured it in the university town with the cheap insurance postcodes, and was finally driving.

Was only a 518. Mine was white, but the same year & the same wheels. Looked quite comical with my L plate on the kidney grills at the front. Was also a better car to learn in due to the rear wheel drive. Most people that start off in front drive cars are either too nervous or come a cropper when they eventually get a rear wheel drive, but it took me nearly 2 years to get my first front wheel drive car.

The MR2 was my first rear wheel drive car so I'd been driving FWD cars for 6 years before I got it, it took my by surprise a couple of times but it didn't take too long to get used to :)

Back to the subject, I wonder how many "unwanted birthday gifts" these are: http://london.craigslist.co.uk/mob/2536072357.html

As pinched off Carpe:
Got caught up in the middle of the riots last night so I had to hide in the only place the bastards wouldn't find me

The Job Centre

In advance of the opening game in London on Saturday, a number of scousers have expressed their concerns about travelling to London following the riots and looting.

They are afraid that all the best stuff has already gone.
