thinking of buying a 406 2.0 hdi estate

Post by yan101 »

as the title says, just want some info on how good the car is, its a 2001 51 plate, 150k miles, about 4 months mot, no tax. bodywork is good, a bit of trim missing, ac works, the only electrical glitches i found were the drivers control for the passenger window dosent work but the passengers side switch does? and the stereo wouldnt turn off or the volume down on the main switch, didnt notice if it had a stalk for the radio controls????

its in black, slightly dirty seats as there cream coloured but i can vax them. £995

what do you think? engine sounded good, clutch was good. just heard some bad stuff about dmf's etc on the hdi and wondered if its a good one? i want to upgrade my megane as its not big enough for the camping trips.

thanks in advance.

Not too sure if it's a good one without seeing it, but it certainly sounds like a better deal than the 160k 1.9td saloon with knackered blowers for £795 which you were thinking about buying for over a month.

haha yeah i was contemplating that one for a while and missed out. the one ive seen is in decent nick, needs one rear tyre and taxing £72 for 6 months. has 156k miles on the clock. few stone chips on the front, but other than that its nice. think he will want £50 plus my megane to swap, just 5 mins ago bought a new tent so im gonna have to get my bum in gear for this one cos i dont think it will be there long for that money

the electric window thing, is it all the windows dont work from the drivers side, or just the drivers window? sometimes its just dirty contacts inside the switch, its really easy to fix after opening up the switch (lot of small bits may fall out) but after that its easy.
good luck at buying the car.

Thanks for all the help. Ye its just the passenger window that dosent open from the drivers side. Im sure itll be an easy fix. Other than that the cream interior needs a good vax lol. It fired up right away. Sounded good. Hopefully itll still be there in a couple of week and ill post pics of me in it haha

my passenger window was the wrong way round on the drivers switch when i got the car, the motor had been wired back up the wrong way round.
I wouldnt worry about it though, the 406 has electrical issues, but someone on here will also have had them and know the solution.

Do what I did - give them £50 (or less, if you don't have that kind of money available (I've been there, too)) and tell them that's down-payment on the 406. By doing this, you show genuine commitment to buy; if the seller is a half-decent human being, they won't sell the car to the next person that comes along. Additionally, if your finances fall through in the end, all you need to do is go back to them and ask for your deposit back, and apologise for wasting their time.

If you're concerned about handing over cash without getting something in return immediately, ask them to write you a signed receipt (that way there is proof of money exchange).

Be sure to tell them exactly when you will be coming to collect the car, and when the day comes, just pay them the rest of the money.

to be honest, ive seen a few since i saw this with slightly lower miles etc for a little more money, so im gonna see how much i get for my bike and not commit myself to this 406 in case i can afford something slightly better, and see where i stand in a couple of weeks. as i get my yearly bonus from work then too

I am going to look at a 2 litre HDI estate thursday.

Done 100400 miles, nice clean interior and should be good for me for a few years and is costing £1300.......

Keep looking and to be fair as i found out, you have to travel for the right one!

Very true , the Best cars are 100s of miles away,
acouple of years ago iused to buy a shitter of a car stick it on Temp cover insurance, and drive out of town 300miles plus for a car, and trade the Shitter in on the mint car, saved getting taxis etc
