Foggy Fog Light Fixed

Post by FarmerPug »

Its been a long time since i noticed the fogginess of my cars fog lights, the last time i couldnt get at the top screw and gave up, but today i did one, you need to take the wheel arch liner off (damm them fastners), then some piece of plastic in behind the liner, held in with a nut, and 2 more of the fastners, one was particularly tricky to get out.
So here was the light before i got it out:

the wheelarch liner out:

and the top bolt:

with that out and the other 2 easier ones out the light comes out easy, just unplug the blue plug and thats it. Push the hose out of the way, but i dont know if thats a standard feature, its held in place with cable ties at some places?

with the fog light out i took out the bulb and the bulb holder panel, then set about cleaning it, i have no idea whats best i tried methalated spirits, then some windowline, then vinegar, but boiling water out of the kettle seemed best, then when it starts to dry out clean the inside vigorously with a cloth, then keep a heater at it for 10-15 mins:

then i put the bulb holder panel and bulb back in, using a bit of vaseline round the seals to keep the unit air tight, then pop the light back into the car:

now with the light cleaned up it makes the other one look a bit foggy

will do, hopefully the heating will keep out the fogginess, it was very dry inside the light when i put it all back together and well sealed.
next one will do tommorow, one thing though is this the way the wheel arch liner is supposed to go?

excellent work frank,

what iused to do on lamps /fog lights is get a very fine drill bit and drill a hole in them,
in aplace that carnt be seen,

Moisture can get in but once it turns into liquid it carnt get out, a fine pilot hole helps ithink.
some fog lights have a bung sort of pipe drain so ive noticed on Japs,

strange why other Makers couidnt follow suit

i think the rangie had some form of pipe network going to the fogs from the engine to supply warm air and another pipe to let out the moisutre.
But i think now that these are cleaned out, and sealed well they should last a good while, the headlight was the same and doing well now.

Im happiest most about actually being able to get the fog light out, the only issue i had was putting the top screw back in, the bit isnt magnetic so it kept falling off, just made it a bit fiddly.

i went out there just a few minuites ago, the moon shining down on the car and the cold air, i turned on the lights and the fog light isnt misty.

now though that i spent the time getting the fog lights cleaned, my mum is complaining that my car is filthy which is true i havent got it washed since may. :cheesy:

Frank if your giving the car a clean Get some Sonax polish,
someone told me it was good stuff and itried it out the other day,

its awesome, even comes with a chip pen, its easy to use and comes in all difernt colours so it hides stone chips and minor scratches ,
just thought id tell you about it,

thanks,
funnilly i used the old touch up kit there the other day, its a good job for removing the wee stone chips on the bonnet as long as they are small, i just never use the lacquer.
I parked the car the other day and an excitable dog jumped up on my door, left a bit of a scratch but i was given some blue tcut and it removed it.

Ah, you mean the touch up kits with the brush ?

ifound them abit useless for stone chips, brush on them is a bit big makes a mess,
best off going to a paint place and getting a pot of paint made up,

proper stuff is very thin, and be used with something fine like a coctail stick to fill paint chip holes,

iwill invest in a Hobby Air-brush one day me thinks, every car ive had as got stone chips, :(

have a read of this, itl make it abit clearer what im rabiting on about

wow he did a good job there.

Luckily my stone chips are usually big enough to fit the brush in to them.
Its worked for the stone chips, the place on the front door where the wind makes a wee kink on the door, and where the seatbelt has been caught between the door and b pillar, its not perfection but better than grey looking stone chips.

But my car is in need of a good respray and all the dents removed, problem is id reckon that would cost £2000 at least. A wee bit too much.

no point having a car perfect mate.

some bastard will only spoil it by runnig a trolley in it or banging there door against yours,
happend with me when ihad a car resprayed, waste of time,

the way you have to look at it is its not a 2011 plate car so an o3 plate will have wear and tear,
bring it up here to manchester and iwill show you a car same as yours same age spec, and ibet you it will make yours look showroom condition if you parked yours next to it

yours as been well looked after compared to some of the 406s ive seen up here,
dont know what condition they are in eire, but over here there Sheds

fair enough you are right, i go to an auction every week and usually everything is a lemon you see a lot of 406s with funny shut lines, big shadows over the headlights.
406s out here are usually in good condition all are a bit mucky (they are popular with farmers) but theres not too many dented ones.
