sat nav replacement

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

sat nav replacement

Post by stephen »

I got a 406 and the sat nav display is slowly dieing, with black lines down the screen i can hardly read it. Turns out these types of screens are very hard and expensive to get hold of. I was thinking of removing the sat altogether and replacing with a normal type screen with the radio and soforth on it, Does anyone know if it is possible to do this without having to change any wiring, would it just connect up as before and work as it should ( minus the sat nav of course) . Any advice on this, i would be most gratefull. :?:

The sat nav display is called the type c display which i put into my car recently. But its possible just to put the old type b display which just has the radio and trip computer on it. You can put the type b display into your car and it should work, it may need a few seconds of pp2000 to work with the cd changer.
Ive got a few spare type b displays at the moment:

id give you one but the postage from NI is the issue, theres tonnes of type b displays on ebay cheap, and expensive ones if you feel the need to spend precisley £30 some sellers have priced their screens just right.

it will definitely need programming, you need to CODE VIN the display ...i'm confirming this ...since on PP2000 in MFD it's there, the VIN. I would suggest you to request from the seller to code vin the display to your vin prior to buying it ...

i havent had to do any vin decoding for mfds
i tried 4 different type b displays in my car and the current type c display has no required decoding when i plugged in the pp2000 all i did was select the option for adding sat nav

Well, ok maybe, but i surely have my code vin on the MFD menu ( on PP2000 ) which can be changeable.. so i suppose it's for something, thought it was for that .. guess not ...

pp2000 can vin decode your radio to suit the car you put it in. but not all sellers on ebay can do that for you, its definatley quicker getting a pp2000 to decode a radio than a radio shop

I have managed to get hold of a type b display, upon fitting it all seemed to work, the radio and cd that is. After fiddling about with it a while i noticed that the controls on the stalk for changing the radio channels did not function and i was also at a loss as to how to set the clock as the display i got off ebay had no front panel with any buttons, only the white centre bit with the screen attached !. The display also seemed very dim and had a black line down the middle so im thinking iv been sold a dud display anyway. As i only paid £1.20 plus £6.99 postage its not a great loss but i shall be returning it to the seller anyway as it seems faulty. I guess i shall have to try and get the proper display, there is one on ebay at the moment but at £79.00 it seems a lot to pay for what it is. :(

Can you stick a type C display in place of a type B one even if doesn't have a sat-nav? Would I still need a remote control to set the time etc. or can I bodge it to do all that with buttons?

Yes you can stick a type c in even without the sat nav, just needs pp2000 to program the car for sat nav so that your radio stalk and cd changer still work.
And you do need the remote no way around it, unless you have a casio remote watch (or any learning remote) and learn the funcitions off someones sat nav remote. Without it you cant change the time, or brightness which i do find useful as the display need to be dimmed for the night.

On the topic of the sat nav, anyone know where i can get a more up to date disk cheaper than the stupid £120 for the 07 version.

I have a 3rd party radio installed so I guess no need for the PP2000. Also, those displays on eBay look like they are sold without remotes.....
