Cheap Car Garage

Post by FarmerPug »

Ive been thinking for some time about some sort of garage to work on my car, there is one on the side of the house but its too narrow for my 406, and my mums clio is in it most of the time.
But its far from my shed which sits at the bottom of the garden, and beside the shed there used to be a big commercial polytunnel which my uncle grew strawberries in before he built our house so there is a flat base, which i plan to put stones on and concrete.
how would one of these do as a garage:

the 406 according to parkers is 1.76m wide but is 3 meters enough to let the doors open?

Dunno mate, I'd build a decent-sized shed if I were you. I assume that thing would be horrid in the wind!

ive been put off the idea of that tempoary one, i got my dad to hold the tape measure, the 406 would fit into a space 3 meters wide, but its not enough to open the doors, so about 4 meters width is whats needed for anything useful. But were thinking of putting up a proper polytunnel, there is a lot of strawberry and mushroom growers round this neck of the woods so theres no shortage of cheap tubing or polythene to do a proper job of it, there is never any trouble with them blowing away in the wind.
Here is the shed, i plan to put up something to the side of it:

the ground seems fairly flat:

:cheesy: That looks like a mobile home?

I really like the idea of a poltunnel, if i build it myself im sure that the first gust of wind will blow it away, so ill get my dad to give me a hand.

But what do you think the ideal width is? Our garage is 3200mm wide which was ok for the panda but cramped for the clio and tight for the 406.

The 406 is 1765 mm wide (excluding mirrors, but not that this really matters)

I would measure the length of one of your doors, multiply that by 1.5, and add that to the width of the car.

This will give you the car's width plus:

- enough room to fully open one of your doors and half-open one door on the other side
- enough room to 3/4 open both doors if the car is parked in the middle (assuming your checkstraps can still hold the doors open properly)

(disclaimer - my maths is fuzzy, the above may be utter bollocks)

i got a tape measure and opened the drivers door, my dad opened the passenger door, and 4 meters seems about the minimum width suitable for the 406.
I also want to put the suzuki in but i dont think its wider than the 406 just quite higher.

.Yup very true, they can Rot from the inside out,
this ones coming from down south warmest part on the Map so hopefully it wont be damp, not that itl matter much as it will be getting plenty of 3x2s added for strength,
*(carnt find anygarages anywhere near 28ft length hence the daft idea of the Static caravan)*

i cant understand all these units of measurment i was looking for polytunnels some are measured in meters which i can grasp others are in feet which is tricky to understand.
6m i think is enough for the length of the 406 saloon but how long is the estate?
